Boys track and field: Mooney, Huntley nail down 4th straight FVC crown

Without standout sprinter Dubem Anikamadu one might think Huntley's chances for a fourth straight Fox Valley Conference boys track and field championship would be in serious jeopardy.

Eric Mooney and the rest of the Red Raiders had other ideas.

Mooney won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was a key component on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams as Huntley won a fourth straight FVC crown with

137 points Friday night at Cary-Grove.

The Huntley senior claimed the 100 in a time of 11.10 and the 200 with a clocking of 22.44. Mooney teamed up with Antonio Passarelli, Ron Noll and Zach Tepper to win the 400 (42.74) and 800 (1:31.41) relays.

"I knew I had to step up with Dubem out," said Mooney. "I really worked hard on my sprints and we worked hard in practice on the relays. I really accelerated on my sprints."

Huntley coach Jim Rolondo praised Mooney.

"Eric is such a competitor and I knew he could double on the 100 and 200 and run the relays," said the Huntley coach. "Eric was awesome and he has such a will to win."

The Red Raiders also got a first place effort from Zach Fitzgerald in the long jump (20 feet, 6 inches).

Dundee-Crown was a distant second with a score of 86 points.

The Chargers claimed first places from Adam Swanson (400, 51.62) and Jack Michalski (triple jump, 41-11 ½).

Swanson edged Huntley's Derek Swanson (51.62) at the finish line.

"I am usually run the 800 but my coach wanted me to run the 400," said Swanson. "I knew in a short race like the 400 you have to get off to a good start. This was a good race going into next week's sectional."

Jacobs, with three first place efforts, placed third with a score of 75 points.

Grabbing top honors for the Golden Eagles were Tommy Subaric (110 hurdles, 15.54), Jermaine Maegdlin-Ferguson (300 hurdles, 39.82) and Zach Albrecht (1,600, 4:22.33).

"My goal was to win conference and it is an awesome feeling," said Subaric. "I had a strong first hurdle and really finished strong."

With the quartet of (Albrecht, Mark Lemke, Brett Bognar, Brandon Cole) Jacobs won the 3,200 relay in a time of 8:10.40.

Crystal Lake South, led by a first place finish from Jack Becker in the 3,200, placed fourth with 66 points.

Becker, who finished second to Huntley's Ian Geisler in the 3,200 at the McHenry County meet, got revenge by winning the FVC title with a time of 9:28.86. Geisler was second delivering a time of 9:36.35.

"I was really upset with the way I raced at the county race," said Becker. "I had a different plan and had a good kick at the end."

Cary-Grove, with 55 points, finished sixth.

The lone first place effort for the Trojans came courtesy of Andrew Stokes, who exploded for a throw of 57-8 ½ to win the shot put.

"I worked hard during the week and really tried to stay calm," said Stokes. "I was very focused."
