Baseball: Win against Wheeling puts Giusti atop Prospect's coaching victories list

Prospect's Ross Giusti moved into the lead for all-time baseball coaching victories in the program with the Knights' 5-4 victory over Wheeling at Larry Pohlman Field on Monday.

The record Giusti broke had been held by Pohlman, who finished with 435 career wins. Giusti now has 436.

It took a thrilling finish from Prospect to help Giusti to the milestone win in Mid-Suburban East play.

With Wheeling leading 4-3, the Knights rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ryan Howe walked to start the inning and stole second base. He advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, then was held at third on a pop single by Nick Ergastolo.

With two outs, Anthony Catalano's two-out double to right plated Howe and Ergastolo.

Bryce Jensen pitched the final 2 innings and got the win for Prospect (14-9, 7-5).

Kyle Bullock enjoyed a 4-for-4 performance and scored 3 runs from the leadoff spot for Wheeling (12-13, 4-9).

Drew Roberts (double) and Andy Shover had 2 hits apiece for the Wildcats.

Ethan Burgh finished 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for Prospect.

Conant 4, Fremd 1: The Cougars got a 2-run homer from Dave Sapyta as part of a 3-run rally in the sixth inning to earn an MSL West win at Fremd.

Colin Broeker doubled twice, and Conant (12-10-1, 7-5) got a big pitching effort from Teague Conrad. He went the distance, allowing 4 hits with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Luke Seidel and Tom Cermak came up with doubles for Fremd (11-9, 5-7).

Rolling Meadows 6, Buffalo Grove 4: A pair of bases-loaded walks and a 3-run double by Matt Lothery in the sixth inning helped host Rolling Meadows scored 5 runs in the fifth inning, and the Mustangs held on to give the Bison their first MSL East loss of the season.

Nate Pardini struck out nine over the first 6 innings for Rolling Meadows (9-11-1, 7-6) and got the victory.

Alex Paul finished 2-for-3 and drove in 2 runs for BG (21-4, 12-1), which got a double from Rio Komatani and a triple from Mac Camardo.

Schaumburg 10, Hoffman Estates 1: The visiting Saxons scored more than 1 run in each of the final four innings to pull away for an MSL West win.

Tyler Robinson, Jack Lancaster and Justin Schoefernacker had 3 hits apiece for Schaumburg (5-16, 3-10), including a pair of doubles for Schoefernacker.

On the mound, Schoefernacker limited Hoffman Estates to 7 hits in a complete-game win.

Jim Kliver and Kyle Krogstad had 2 hits each for Hoffman Estates (6-14, 2-10), and Dylan Bloom had a double.

Elk Grove 5, Hersey 1: Xander Rojahn tossed a gem, allowing 4 hits and striking out 10 with no walks, to help the visiting Grenadiers win in MSL East action.

Rojahn went the full 7 innings and threw 58 of his 92 pitches for strikes.

Shane Crimmins had a productive day for Elk Grove (6-14-1, 3-9), finishing with a double, 2 RBI and 2 walks. Ryne Singsank went 2-for-3 with a double, and Matt Crimmins and Sebastian Garza had 1 RBI apiece.

Daniel Clawson produced an RBI double for Hersey (10-16-1, 5-8), and Hunter Luke also doubled.

St. Viator 11, St. Patrick 1: The host Lions erupted for 8 runs in the fourth inning on their way to an East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.

Matthew Zawilenski (double), Casey Pulikowski and Bryce Hellgeth each drove in 2 runs for St. Viator.

Jack Mahoney was sharp on the mound for the Lions (13-13), striking out six and allowing 2 hits over 6 innings.

Christian Liberty 12, Morgan Park 1 (5 inn.): Sophomore Titus Bennett earned the pitching decision and also had a double as the Chargers rolled in nonconference play.
