Badminton: Sectional titles for Hersey, Fremd, Prospect

Hersey, Fremd and Prospect each earned sectional titles in badminton on Thursday.

• At Buffalo Grove, Hersey finished with 14 points to edge the host Bison (11½) in the final team standings.

Hersey junior Susan Ferris won the singles titles by topping Kimberlee Stachura of McHenry. In the third-place singles match, Hersey junior Hannah Johns won in three sets against Hoffman Estates junior Priyanka Patel.

Doubles went Buffalo Grove's way, as seniors Bella Berns and Sarah Katz topped junior teammates Sydney Fortman and Claire McLoone for top honors. Hersey's Maddie Jacobson and Sara Hwang defeated Hoffman Estates' Hannah Koo and Maya Lipinski for third place.

• Fremd was dominant in winning the sectional it hosted, coming away with a sweep of the top finishing spots.

In singles, freshman Rachel Ye and sophomore Kellie Liu grabbed the top two finishes, and in doubles, Hannah Chen and Jenny Li topped teammates Jasmine Caro and Sharon Wu in the first-place matchup.

Fremd netted 18 points, well ahead of runner-up St. Charles East (8½).

Conant senior Burcin Asilturk also earned a spot at state with a fourth-place singles finish.

• At Prospect, the host Knights edged out Barrington in a tight team race 13½-12½.

In singles, Prospect sophomore Jolene Neuhalfen won a two-setter over Barrington junior Maya Tanna for the championship. The Fillies also advanced junior Juliea Gwozdz in fourth place.

In doubles, Prospect had the edge again as seniors Colleen Stanford and Serena Zhang defeated Barrington's Ariana O'Connell and Heyu Sun for top honors.

Schaumburg seniors Sanjana Patel and Sindy Sariev also qualified to state with a fourth-place finish.

• At York, the host Dukes rolled to the team title with 17.5 points, and Elk Grove earned a pair of entrants in the state tournament. Grens junior Lauren Oda advanced by finishing third in singles, and Carmela Aldea and Johanna Duckmann took second in doubles.
