Softball: St. Viator falls in Woodstock

St. Viator's softball team headed west to Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock on Wednesday and was able to get in a full East Suburban Catholic Conference game on a day when many teams were rained out.

The Lions dropped an 8-2 decision to the Hurricanes, who jumped ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the first inning.

"I was surprised we got it in," said Lions coach John Scotillo. "It was really raining hard when we were driving there but once we got there, it never rained."

Just two days earlier, the Lions fell 17-0 to the Hurricanes in Arlington Heights.

"So I was really happy that we stayed with them, this time," Scotillo said. "We are going to try and build on this."

Nicole Ardito, Anne Sweeney and freshman pitcher Gianna Saverino had the 3 hits for the Lions (2-19, 0-8).

Coming up a player short for the trip, Scotillo had to move first baseman Haley Robinson to left field. The Eau Claire recruit made a fine catch at the fence, a long running catch on a foul ball and threw a runner out at the plate to freshman catcher Marissa Zanon.

"We played much better defense today," Scotillo said. "We were a little rushed through warm-ups because we got there late and we gave up 4 runs right away in the first inning. But that happens."

Robinson scored on an error in the first inning and CeCe Kaiser produced a sacrifice fly for the Lions' second run in the third inning.

"We also had some terrific plays by our shortstop (Ardito) and a nice diving stop by our second baseman (Tori Scheidecker) who threw to first for the out. Our freshmen are getting a lot of experience and we hope we can keep moving forward."

Rolling Meadows 18, Addison Trail 8: On Tuesday, Meadows won the nonconference game in Addison as Parker Cavanaugh (2-for-5) belted a grand slam and had 6 RBI. Other multiple hitters for Meadows were Stephanie Thompson (3-for-3, double), Sara Benner (3-for-4, double), Kendra Herring (2-for-3, double), Caroline Slowik (3-for-5) and Mallory King (2-for-5).
