Girls soccer: Wahlberg sets St. Charles North scoring record

St. Charles North forward Gia Wahlberg became the North Stars' all-time girls leading goal scorer Friday when she sank her 75th goal of her career during a 2-0 win over Waukee (IA) High School at the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa.

Wahlberg scored in the fourth minute to pass former North Stars standout Leah DeMoss, who led the program with 74 goals. Walhberg also added an assist on Bella Falco's goal while Sara Maleski (0 saves) and Nathalie Grier (3 saves) combined in net for the shutout.

It marked a 2-0 day in Iowa overall for North (12-0-1), which also beat Divine Savior Holy Angels of Milwaukee in penalty kicks 2-1. Hailey Rydberg added a 39th minute PK before the Dashers forced a shootout with a goal in the 73rd minute. In the shootout, Rydberg and Wahlberg covered their shots. Maleski had 4 saves overall while Grier had 2 for the match.

St. Charles East 0, Waubonsie Valley 0: At the Naperville Invite, although the Saints (9-4-4) did not score, goalkeeper Grace Griffin preserved her ninth shutout of the season.
