Chicago White Sox's offense comes alive in win

It was a lost weekend for the Chicago White Sox, who dropped three straight to the Houston Astros while being outscored 27-2.

Sox first baseman Jose Abreu did not dwell on the disconcerting sweep.

"What matters is we won today," Abreu said through a translator. "We were able to break the losing streak. We've had some tough moments, but we're grinding and we're fighting."

Sparked by Abreu and Yoan Moncada, the White Sox came out swinging Monday night and beat the Seattle Mariners 10-4 at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The offense, which had just 15 combined hits against Houston, erupted for 18 against Seattle.

The Sox wasted little time jumping on Mariners starter Mike Leake, who was greeted with 7 straight hits in the first inning. The White Sox became the first team to accomplish that feat since the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 17, 2014, according to Elias.

The Sox scored 5 runs in the first inning, added 2 more in the second and went on to snap a seven-game losing streak.

Abreu (4-for-5) had 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Moncada tripled in his first at-bat and followed up with a double and home run. Needing just a single to hit for the cycle, Moncada struck out and flied out in his first two plate appearances.

"I'm really mad at him," Abreu said with a grin. "He had two chances and he couldn't do it. Seriously, I'm happy for him. He's going to have more chances to do it in the future."

Said Moncada: "I couldn't do it today, but it doesn't matter. We won."

Pitching in:

Before Monday's game against Seattle, scheduled starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right rotator cuff inflammation.

Carson Fulmer moved up a day and started against the Mariners. It was easily his best outing of the season.

Coming in with a 7.50 ERA, Fulmer lowered it to 6.00 after pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.

"It was his line to the plate," manager Rick Renteria said. "He stayed behind the ball a lot better. He attacked the strike zone and was finishing his pitches very well."

With Fulmer bumped up, Chris Volstad starts against the Mariners on Tuesday night.

The Sox purchased Chris Beck's contract from Class AAA Charlotte, and the right-hander pitched 3 innings of relief against the Mariners and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits to earn his first major-league save.

Garcia injured:

Avisail Garcia had to be helped off the field after straining his right hamstring running to first base in the second inning. Trayce Thompson replaced him in right field.

The White Sox announced Garcia will be reevaluated Tuesday.
