Softball: Patient Palatine pulls in RM title

Palatine's softball team will head to its first-place Mid-Suburban League West showdown at Barrington on Monday as the Rolling Meadows Mustangs Stampede tournament champions.

The Pirates took the title under the lights on Saturday night with a 3-0 triumph over Evanston behind sophomore Rhiann Dick's 5-hitter.

Dick (4-1) kept the Pirates (11-1) in the game to the end and it paid off when she got 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Freshman Kaitlyn Reed got the Pirates on the board when she tripled to score senior Grace Seiffert (leadoff single) from first base for a 1-0 lead.

"I was just going up there trying to get a base hit to help out my pitcher and keep things going for the team," Reed said. "I was really happy with how it all worked out and how we came together as team in the seventh."

"I was just trying to get on base so my teammates could get me in," Seiffert added. "I had complete confidence in all of us that we would come through."

After a walk to Emily Parrott walk, Maddie Craver doubled to score Reed (1-for-3). Grace Huff (2-for-4) then made it 3-0 with a single to right side to score Parrott.

Dick finished with 9 strikeouts.

"Our team was really helping me throughout the whole game, offensively and defensively," Dick said. "And when they were always staying positive it helped me throw strikes and get the outs when we needed them. Anna (Selleck) behind the plate was phenomenal and she really helped me stay focused during the whole game, it was a great team win."

Craver and Parrott (Appalachian State recruit) played flawless defense on the left side of the infield, backing up Dick and keeping the Wildkits off base. Each made three difficult plays on the left side, which helped clinch the win.

"Emily looked like she was already a Division 1 shortstop out there today," said Pirates assistant coach Kristen Proffitt. "The plays she made on the left side were extremely difficult, yet she made them look easy. It's so great to have such a solid left side. It lets our pitchers hit their spots and it takes away hits from our opponents."

Brittany Padden also had a double for Palatine.

"There was no doubt in my mind that we could pull it off," Padden added. " I knew that with our strong hitters that if I got on base they would bring me in. We've been working really hard and it's nice to see it paying off."

The Pirates are 3-0 in the West while Barrington stands at 11-0 and 4-0.
