Girls water polo: Conant tops Palatine for fifth at Pirate Invitational

The girls water polo teams from Conant and Palatine ended up playing for fifth place in the Pirate Invitational hosted by Palatine on Saturday, with the Cougars winning 10-4.

Olivia Olszewski led Conant with 5 goals, and Ellis Nelson, Maggie O'Brien, Natalia Koval and Hannah Bellof each scored once for Palatine.

Lincoln-Way East edged Evanston 7-5 for the tourney title, and St. Charles North handled Maine South 9-1 in the third-place game.

In the seventh-place matchup, Prospect earned a 10-4 victory over Neuqua Valley as senior Colleen Doyle scored game-best 4 goals.

Earlier, in pool play, Conant edged Prospect 8-7. Olszewski (3 goals) and Nia Tsoulos (2) paced Conant, while Connie Vuong and Monica Sanchez both scored twice for the Knights.

Palatine started its day with a thriller - a 10-10 tie against Neuqua Valley. Maggie O'Brien (5 goals) and Koval (4) carried the scored load for the Pirates.

• Elk Grove went 2-2 in the tournament it hosted Saturday, blanking Warren and Rolling Meadows 10-0 and suffering a 12-5 loss to Riverside-Brookfield and a 10-9 setback to Maine West.

Alyssa Bonilla and Kaylee Hatfield had 3 goals apiece against Warren. Against Meadows, Bonilla had a game-best 7 goals and Gillian Guerra had 3.

Rolling Meadows finished 1-3, the victory a 13-10 decision over Warren.
