Softball: Peterson's power helps Barrington past Hersey

Kendall Peterson was sure ready when Barrington's softball team began defense of its Mid-Suburban League championship on Tuesday.

The Fillies junior third baseman belted a two-out 3-run homer over left field fence in the third inning and a RBI triple in the second while going 2-for-3 with a career-high 5 RBI in Barrington's 14-2 five-inning win over visiting Hersey at the Fields of Dreams.

"It was great to see our team hit one through nine in the batting order," said Peterson, a Northwestern recruit who also had a RBI groundout and a sacrifice bunt. "That made all the difference for our team."

Other multiple hitters for the Fillies were Caroline Hoppe (2-for-2, double, career-high 4 RBI), Abbey Jacobsen (2-for-4, RBI) and Rachel Mori (2-for-2, double, 3 runs). Maria Gryzlo (1 run) belted her first career extra base hit with a double in the fourth inning.

Pitcher Catherine McMahon (3-0) also doubled for Barrington and earned the win (three innings) while Tori Meyer threw the final two innings.

Makayla Tsagalis belted a home run for Hersey (3-2, 0-1) and Sarah Bailitz doubled.

Palatine 14, Elk Grove 4 (5 inn): Palatine (6-0, 1-0) won its MSL opener behind pitcher Sarah Grossman (4-0), who recorded 11 strikeouts.

Top hitters for the host Pirates were Maddie Craver (4-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, 4 runs), Brittany Padden (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Grace Huff (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Emily Parrott (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 4 runs) and Grace Seiffert (2-for- 2, 2 RBI). Rhiann Dick and Amanda Stanczuk also doubled for Palatine.

"It was a really good team win," Huff said. "We scored every inning which is one of our team goals."

A single by Olivia Masnica and home run by Katia Pendowski gave EG (1-4, 0-1) a 2-0 lead before the Pirates rallied for the win.

"I'm happy we were able to win our first conference game," Craver said. "We have good momentum going into our conference games this week. I was focusing on hitting the ball hard and making solid contact. My teammates continued to hit the ball hard."

"It's nice going into conference knowing that my team will back me up by scoring runs and making the plays," Grossman added. "I've been focusing on winning every pitch and putting my team in a good position to hit and come away with the win.

Jaime Klicka doubled for Elk Grove while Brook Baldassare had a triple.

Prospect 12, Schaumburg 0 (5 inn.): Sophomore Claire Doherty (4-0) earned the win for visiting Prospect (6-1, 1-0), which was led by Lauren Caldrone (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Alyssa Cacini (3-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Madeline Borkowski (2-for-4, 2 RBI) in the MSL opener.

Talia Torosian and Sage Morton had the hits for Schaumburg (0-5, 0-1).

Conant 14, Rolling Meadows 6: Junior Morgan Long belted a home run and a double and went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI as host Conant (2-2, 1-0) won its MSL opener behind winning pitcher Jackie Carlucci (3 innings, 3 strikeouts, no hits) and Julia Flaishaker (4 innings, 5 strikeouts).

Other top hitters for the Cougars were Makenna McCarthy (4-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI, double), Alexa Nallen (3-for-4, doubles, 2 runs, RBI) and Jackie Birchfield (2-for-3, 2 runs RBI). Hannah Oh also doubled for Conant.

Sara Benner (1-for-2, RBI) and Kendra Herring 1-for-3, 2 RBI) had homers for Meadows (1-4, 0-1). Parker Cavanaugh (2-for-2, 2 runs), Elise Kowalski (1-for-2, 1 run) also had hits for the Mustangs, who led 4-3 after three innings.

Maine West 14, Highland Park 4 (5 inn.): Abigail Gawlinski (3 innings, 4 strikeouts) and Jessica Steingard (2 innings, 1 strikeout) combined to no-hit the visiting Giants in the CSL North contest.

Leading the West offense were multiple hitters Gabriella Demma (3-for-4, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs) Allison Pearson (2-for-3, home run, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Brianna Torres (2-fo-r4, 1 run), Katelyn Aragon (2-for-3, double, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and Olivia Feldkamp (2-for-3, double, 2 runs, RBI). Bridget Christiansen also had a double for West.
