Baseball: Hersey gives Brownley first career wins

Walt Brownley's first win as a varsity baseball coach came far away from Arlington Heights where he landed the job in March of 2017.

The rookie Hersey skipper watched his Huskies claim a 15-5 five-inning triumph over Gosnell (TN) on Thursday night in Tennessee.

And it didn't take long for the longtime former Hersey assistant to notch his second win.

The Huskies topped Sycamore (Pleasant View, TN) 11-0 on Friday.

In Brownley's first win, the Huskies poured out 12 hits, led by Dan Kubsik (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs), A.J. Ceffelio (2-for-4,) and Luke Picchiotti (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs, double). Also getting hits for Hersey were James Denten (double), Will Adamski (double), Sam Alonzo (double), Daniel Clawson (double, 3 RBI) and Ryan Trachsel.

On the mound, winning pitcher Luke Hunter threw 4⅓ innings with 3 hits, 1 earned run and 1 strikeout.

Brownley, who played for coach Paul Groot at Schaumburg, then watched the Huskies produce 13 hits, led by Kubsik (2-for-3, 2 runs), Cade O'Neal (2-for-3, 3 runs) and Adamski (2-for-3 double).

Daniel Clawson and Picchiotti each added doubles for the Huskies.

Brian Massaccesi earned the win, tossing a 1-hitter with 9 strikeouts.

On Friday, the Huskies fell 7-3 to Kennett (MO.) and 7-6 to Milan (TN).

O'Neal went 2-for-3 against Kennett and Clawson belted a homer. Picchiotti recorded 6 strikeouts and Trey Schmidt had three.

Milan won with a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hunter Luke and (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and Kyle Smith (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and Tom Quirk led the Hersey offense.

On Saturday, the Huskies (3-7) dropped a 12-8 decision to Jefferson, despite outhitting its opponent 10-5. Picchiotti (3-for-4, home run, double, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Clawson (2-for-2, home run) led the Huskies' offense.

The Huskies came back with a 6-4 win over Southside (Jackson TN) as Denten fired an 8-hitter with 2 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. The offense was led by Quirk, who went 2-for-2 with a run while O'Neal and Adamski each had doubles and Trachsel a single.

Wheeling 17, Spencerport (NY). 6 (6 innings): Wheeling's Kevin Pavia went 4-4 with a walk and 5 RBI while Kyle Bullock was 3-3 with 4 runs and 2 walks as the Wildcats picked up the win in Florida on Thursday.

Cade Zalewski added a 2-for4 performance with a triple and 3 RBI as Matthew Patterson picked up the win by working five innings.

Bullock started out the road trip 11 for 17, which included 8 runs scored, 5 of/6 stolen bases, a double and 2 triples off the wall.

After a loss to Hilton (NY), the Wildcats record stood at 6-4.

St. Viator 20, Thunderbird (AZ) 13: Viator pounded out 21 hits led by Bryce Hellgeth, who was 4-for-6 with a home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs in Thursday's game. Other multiple hitters for the Lions were Casey Kmet (3-for-5, home run, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Michael Wittich (3-for-5, home run, double, 4 RBI), Hunter Johnson (2-for-3, double, 4 runs, 2 RBI), Ryan Stejskal (2-for-4), Jack Mahoney (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Casey Pulikowski (2-for-4, RBI). Matthew Zawilenski had a double.

Stejskal pitched the first four innings to earn the win, striking out 3 as the Lions grabbed 10-5lead after three innings.

In an 8-4 loss to Lakewood, the Lions were led on offense by Kmet (2-for-4). Jason Fitzmaurice and Johnson each doubled.

Barrington splits: The Broncos won the opener 6-2 over Covington (OH) and fell 10-0 (5 innings) in Game 2 on Friday.

Rami Fakhoury went four innings (0 earned runs, 1 strikeout, 3 hits) to earn the win in Game 1 while R.J. Nowicki picked up te save, striking out six with 1 hit and no earned runs in the final three innings.

Leading the Broncos' offense were Johnny Gagne (3-for-4, 2 runs). Tyler Acosta (double, 2 runs), Michael Zavoli, Clark Elliott and Nick Bogaerts each had hits for Barrington.

In Game 2, the Broncos only hit was by Alex Benson.

Leyden 15, Fenton 3: Leyden came away with a 15-3 win on Saturday over visiting Fenton as Nick Herrera (3-for-3, 3 RBI, triple, double, 2 runs) and Danny Flores (2-for-3, triple, 3 runs, 2 RBI) led the offense. Winning pitcher Jose Solis went 2⅓ innings, striking out two.
