Baseball: St. Charles North's Skurka fires no-hitter

St. Charles North senior Nick Skurka tossed a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday as the North Stars' baseball team rolled to a 15-0 win over Walnut Hills of Cincinnati in Cocoa Beach, Fla.

Skurka had 8 strikeouts and 1 walk and faced just 16 batters.

Leading the offense for SCN were Ryan Thiese (2 hits, 2B), Egon Hein (2 hits, RBI), Tyler Brazel (3 RBI), Justin Dunne (2B, 2 RBI) and Christian Erickson (2B, RBI).

In their second game of the day against Stewartville (MN), the North Stars (3-1) unleashed an 18-hit attack in winning 22-2 in four innings.

Erickson had 2 hits with a triple and 4 RBI while Erik Larson (2 hits, 3B, 3 EBI), Patrick Bellock (2 hits, 2B), Grant Belich (2 RBI), Ryan Plontek (3B, 2 RBI), Ethan Laria (2B, RBI), Ben Nehring (2 hits, 2 RBI), Matt Spotts (2 hits, 2 RBI) and John Hamer (2 RBI) also contributed. Spotts (1 hit) and Hamer were SCN's pitchers.

Batavia 7, Willowbrook 6: Joey Sartain tripled and scored on Cole Nelson's double in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Bulldogs (2-1) to a win at Wheaton College. Blake Carlson added a triple for Batavia and Jack Trzyna had 2 RBI.

South Elgin 11, Fremd 1: Patrick Keaty, Austin Doty (2B, 3B, RBI) and Ben Hetelle (RBI) had 2 hits each to lead South Elgin (1-1-1) to a nonconference win. Andrew Gambino added a double and 3 RBI for the Storm and Nick Poblocki drove in 2 runs. Robert Zagorski allowed 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in 4 innings to earn the win.

Geneva 12, Conant 9: Ian Hanson had 2 hits with a triple and 3 RBI as the Vikings (2-2) won this nonconference game. Also contributing for Geneva were Dominic Guido (2B, RBI), Cullen Geary (2 hits, 3 RBI), Nathan Dewey (2 hits, 2B) and Sean Sinisko (2B, 2 RBI). Nick Black was the winning pitcher.

Elgin Academy wins 2: Playing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Hilltoppers (4-0) beat Meriemont (OH) 16-2 and Worthington Christian (OH) 4-2. In the first game, CJ Carani had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBI while Jonathan Cruz (3 hits, 3 RBI) and Colin Konicek (2B) added to the 10-hit attack. Cruz threw 4 innings for the win allowing just 1 hit with 9 Ks and 1 walk. He then drove in 2 runs in the second game as did Conicek. Ethan Hill allowed 6 hits with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks for the win.

Cary-Grove 9, Wauconda 9: Kyle Ives had 3 hits with a triple and 3 RBI for Cary-Grove (4-0-1). Billy Blank and Harry Heinisch added 2 hits and an RBI each for the Trojans.

Homewood-Flossmoor 5, Jacobs 4: Cory Dennison (2 hits, Daniel Klein (2B, RBI) and Daniel Murray (2B) led Jacobs (1-2).

Morristown-Hamblen East (NJ) 6, Kaneland 5: Nic Panico had a double and an RBI and Robbie Dudzinski, Thomas Shaw and Mikey Rogers each drove in runs for Kaneland (4-3-1).

Battleground Academy (TN) 12, Westminster Christian 2: Mason Runkel had 2 doubles and Theron Dorsey 2 hits for Westminster (3-4).

Aurora Christian 5, Vandalia Christian (NC) 1: Winning pitcher Hunter Thompson and Sam Tickel each had doubles and an RBI for Aurora Christian (2-1). Thompson went 6 innings and allowed just 1 hit with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
