Softball: Velazquez, Hoffman top Larkin

Hoffman Estates softball coach Lindsey Hamma preaches to her players to try to "win every inning."

Giselle Velazquez certainly won every at-bat on Monday.

The Hawks senior just missed the cycle, belting a home run, double and 2 singles while going 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and 3 runs to help lead the Hawks to a 14-8 nonconference win over host Larkin (0-4).

"Giselle had a big day," said Hamma, who watched her co-captain collect 4 RBI and scored 3 runs in the Hawks' first win of the season.

Hoffman (1-2) scored in each of the first three innings (2-4-4) and led 10-6.

"When we got those first 2 runs in the first inning, that kind of set the tone," Hamma said. "We try to tell them to win every inning and they did a good job early in the game. So even when they (Larkin) got the 5 runs in the third inning, we were still up by 4 runs and that made a big difference."

Also making a difference in the offense for the Hawks were multiple hitters Brianna Venegas (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Allura Magsino (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 4 runs) and Emily Grossi (2-for-5, double), Patricia Wadas (2-for-4) and Ayanna Ward (2-for-5).

Grossi (1-2) picked up the win, collecting 8 strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

Lake Park 8, Schaumburg 2: Senior Janalee Lyke (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double), sophomore Talia Torisian (1-for-2, triple, 1 run) and junior Tiffani Rudnick (1-for-4, 1 run) had the 4 hits for visiting Schaumburg (0-2).

Saxons senior Caitlin Bertaud went all 6 innings, striking out five.

Ridgewood 7, Maine West 0: Ridgewood ace Alyssa Malicki tossed a no-hitter (1 walk) at the visiting Warriors (3-2).

Prospect goes 2-1: Playing three games over the weekend in Orlando, Fla., Prospect raised its record to 3-1 with wins over Appleton North (Wis.) and Shipley (Penn.)

On Saturday, sophomore Claire Doherty improved to 2-0 with the win over Appleton North, striking out seven while tossing a 10-hitter in the 7-6 triumph.

Colleen Palczynski clubbed a homer and Casey Cunniff doubled for the Knights, who received a 3-for-4 performance by Lauren Caldrone.

Coach Krystina Mackowiak's Knights split a pair of games on Sunday, cruising past Shipley 22-0 in three innings and falling 11-1 in six innings to Elizabeth Forward (Penn.)

Junior Emalee Depa threw a perfect game with 5 strikeouts against Shipley, while Cunniff (2-for-3), Caldrone (2-for-2, double) led the offense.

In the loss to Elizabeth Forward, Alyssa Cacini went 2-for-3 to pace the offense while Depa (3 hits, 2 walks) and Doherty (2 strikeouts, 4 hits) shared the pitching duties.
