Baseball: Scouting Northwest

MID SUBURBAN EASTBuffalo GroveCoach: Tim Miller (4th year, 62-44-1)

Last year: 29-5-1 (2nd, MSL East). Regional champion

Key losses: John Carpinelli (U of Inianapolis) Chase Marsh (Quincy) John Lundgren (U of Illinois Springfield) Tyler Rundquist, Leo Rule

Returnees: Seniors: Zach Fricke, P, (Valparaiso); Mac Camardo, P/1B; TJ Constertina, ss/2B/P; Juniors: Riley Rundquist, 3B

Newcomers: Georgio Sakkos, Tyler Concialdi, Anthony Adams, Tyler Rieger, Connor Adams, Nate Rogers, Carter Gledhill, C. Soph: Alec Paul, CF.

Outlook: The Bison are coming off their best season since 1999 and came up just a bit short in the state playoffs. Buffalo Grove appears to be poised to take another run at the MSL East title with a tremendous pitching corps of Valpo-commit Zach Fricke, Mac Camardo and TJ Constertina. But returnee Jack Vaselaney did not come out this year. Riley Rundquist, a junior, should be attracting the interest of D-I schools this year. "We have had a real good off-season and our kids are hungry to compete at a high level this year," Buffalo Grove coach Tim Miller said. "We know we are gonna have a little bit of a target on our back. We play another tough schedule and start the season off with our fourth trip to Florida. This is a great group of kids and has a very good shot at winning a sectional title."

Elk GroveCoach: Terry Beyna (19th season, 322-292)

Last year: 14-19 (3rd, MSL East)

Key losses: Brett Taucher, Joe Lopez, Anthony Navarro, Joe Leone

Returnees: Seniors: Zach Mahoney, C; Tyler Selvig, OF/P; Justin Post, OF. Juniors: Ryne Singsank 1B/P; Xander Rojahn P/OF, (Arkansas); Nick Hoffman, SS/P. Soph: Zach Schwarz, C/INF.

Newcomers: Juniors: Josh Periswamy INF/P; Sebastian Garza, OF; Matt Crimmins, INF; Shane Crimmins, INF; Joe Montag P

Outlook: The Grend took a step back last season after winning three consecutive MSL titles. And with a solid core back they figure to return to the hunt this season. Xander Rojahn, who verbally committed to Arkansas, leads a talented pitching staff that includes 6-foot-7 Ryne Singsank, Nick Hoffman and Tyler Selvig. The bats should also be alive with three-year starter Hoffman, Selvig, Zach Mahoney, Justin Post, Singsank and Zach Schwartz. "I expect us to be a tight-knit team that will play hard every day," Elk Grove coach Terry Beyna said. "Juniors Xander Rojahn, Ryne Singsank, and Nick Hoffman will be major contributors to the pitching staff. Filling out the rest of the staff will be a key to success for us. Hofmann gives us a true leadoff hitter that should be able to apply pressure on our opponents. Singsank will be a big presence in the middle of the order offensively."

HerseyCoach: Wally Brownley (1st year)

Last year: 9-23-1 (6th, MSL East)

Key losses: Tyler Haffey, Quinn Gudaitis, Alberto Garcia, Mark Losacco, Thomas Barnes, Dan Greenfield, and Patrick Dempsey

Outlook: There may be no tougher loss for any team than when Hersey coach Bob Huber retired after last season. The Huskies, who have a nice mix of seniors, juniors and sophomores, will center around Oklahoma-commit Cade O'Neal and University of Chicago-commit Cristian Rodrigues. "Our seniors all exemplify the hard-working qualities we encourage," first-year Hersey coach Wally Brownley said. "Our junior class will provide depth and a competitive edge to solidify our lineup. Additionally, our talented sophomores supply energy and an exciting look at the future of Hersey baseball."

ProspectCoach: Ross Giusti (21st season 422-274)

Last year: 20-12 (1st, MSL East)

Key losses: John Morgan, Grant Zellmer, Ben Courtney, Frankie Mack, Grant Whitebloom, Ryan Roggeman, Nick DeCapri, Ben Lindell, Chase Cummings, Sam Lumia, Tim Krause, Adrian Perez

Returnees: Seniors: Ryan Howe, SS/P, (Purdue); Anthony Catalano, 2B; Rich Baczek, OF/1B; Mack Malczewski, P, (St. Francis); John Czseslawski, P/OF; Nick Ergastolo, C; Tony Composto, OF/INF; Jack Ankony, OF/P; Jack Heiss, C; Bracken Sullivan,1B; Mark LaCamera, INF/OF; Dan Cresop, P

Outlook: The defending MSL East champs figure to be right in the mix for the conference title again this season. The Knights feature a veteran-senior dominated squad led by Purdue-commit Ryan Howe, who was all-area last year. Another all-area returnee, Rich Baczek, will key the offense along with Howe, Anthony Catalano and Nick Ergastolo. Pitching also will be strength with Howe, Mack Malczewski, John Czeslawski, Jack Ankony and Dan Cresop. "We have a nice core of returning players with a wealth of varsity experience," Prospect coach Ross Giusti said. "We have a talented group of juniors who should complement this group in terms of giving us solid depth at most positions. What I'm optimistic of is the competitive nature of this team. They really push each other in a positive way which makes our clubhouse a great place to be."

Rolling Meadows

Coach: Jim Lindeman (16th season, 242-269)

Last year: 6-23 (6th MSL East)

Key losses: Mark Nolan, Zach Marcopulos, Donnie Mrofcza, Frank Storniolo, Justin Thompson, Marco Perez

Returnees: Seniors: Jack Kane, SS/P; Joe Coen, INF/C/P; Emmett Dessimoz, OF; Matt Lothery, INF/C/P; Ryan Lane, OF/INF/P; Nate Pardini, OF/P; Brandon Janowicz INF

Newcomers: Seniors: Angelo Shands, OF; Ryan McAlhaney, OF. Juniors: Alex Hoffman, INF/OF/P; Javonte James-Warrener INF/OF; Joe Marcucci, C; Jake Martin, INF; Dylan Wagner, OF/P; Cullen Gonet, INF. Soph: Jacob Johnson-Wright, OF; Luke Joyce, INF/OF/

Outlook: Scoring runs last year was at a premium for the Mustangs. This year they will rely on a nice mix of seniors, juniors and sophomores led by Matt Lothery. Jack Kane, Joe Coen, Emmett Desssimoz, Ryan Lane, Nate Pardini and Brandon Janowicz all saw significant time last year. "We hope to improve in all facets of the game this coming season," Rolling Meadows coach Jim Lindeman said. "We can be more competitive if we can throw strikes consistently and swing the bats better than we have in the last couple of seasons. We are hoping for consistent improvement from our returning players and positive contributions from our newcomers."

WheelingCoach: Jason Wieder (5th season, 62-105)

Last year: 15-20 (4th MSL East)

Key losses: Jack Splett (Oakton College), Brian Maloney, Mike Wiase, Bryan Niznik (Edgewood College), Jalen Dennis (North Central), Johnny Kappel (Augustana), Joey Sineni, Zach Yfantis

Returnees: Seniors: Kyle Bullock, CF; Drew Roberts,C; Josh Boesen, P; Cade Kaplan, RF/C; DJ Godlewski, SS/P; Patrick Cooney, P; Nate Dirkes, OF/P; Kevin Pavia, OF; Billy Leslie, P; Robby Nehrke, 1B/P. Junior: Andy Shover, 1B

Newcomers: Juniors: Jeremy Kim, 2B; Eric Konrath, P/INF/OF; Michael Best, 3B/SS/P. Soph: Cade Zalewski, 3B. Fresh: Joe Jordan, OF/P/1B

Outlook: This is the most talented and deepest team Wheeling has had in some time. The Wildcats return four-year starter Drew Roberts along with three-year starters Kyle Bullock, Josh Boesen and DJ Godlewski, while Patrick Cooney and Nate Dirkes also have played for three years. Add in Andy Shover, who started last season, and the Wildcats can make a serious challenge in the East. "We have a lot of depth at each position this year and have a very strong core of players who have been up with us for three years now," Wheeling coach Jason Wieder said. "The key for us this year is going to come on the mound. If we can throw strikes and control other team's running games, we should be able to field it with the best of them. I have great confidence and belief in this year's team."

MID SUBURBAN WESTBarringtonCoach: Pat Wire (5th season, 127-51)

Last year: 28-8 (1st, MSL West) MSL champion

Key losses: Ryan Loutos, Will Yorton, Brooks Gosswein, Blake Gosswein, Jeff Korus, Eric Kozlowski, Tyler Trojan

Returnees: Tyler Acosta, CF, (Illinois), Nick Bogaerts, P/3B/1B; Brad Coble, P; Daniel Ensign, P/OF; Rami Fakhoury, P; Johnny Gagne, 2B/SS; Jake Horcher, OF; Logan Marion, OF; Jake Meyer, P/3B; David Mitchell, 1B/OF; Mikey Owsley, OF/P; Devin Seibert, INF; Michael Zavoli, C. Junior: Clark Elliott, SS (Michigan)

Newcomers: Junior: Jake Ackard, OF,

Outlook: The Broncos have won or shared the conference title the past five seasons. And they took a huge step forward by becoming MSL champions last year. But graduation hit Barrington like a sledgehammer, as the Broncos lost seven starters as well as their top three starting pitchers. But optimism still reigns as the Broncos are returning a pair of Big 10 recruits in Tyler Acosta and Clark Elliott, who will move from third to short this year. Nick Bogaerts and Jake Meyer, who saw some action last year, will be the main starters while Brad Coble will be the top reliever. "We will have a mountain to climb for sure with a lot of unproven players but we believe we will be up for the challenge," Barrington coach Pat Wire said. "Our goal, like every year, is to put Barrington baseball in a position to win the Mid-Suburban League title. The league is filled with tremendous coaches and programs and we understand the difficulty of reaching that goal due to the tremendous competition."

ConantCoach: Derek Fivelson (4th year 66-73)

Last year: 16-19 (5th, MSL West), Regional Champion

Key losses: Logan Smith, CJ Deshazer (Heartland Community College), Tim Fauth (Harper), Chase Fahy, Cody Gale, Ian Taylor (State Fair C.C.)

Returnees: Dave Sapyta, C; Colin Broeker, 1B/DH/P; Tyler Hedman, 2B, (Saint Xavier University); Sam Ryan, 2B, (Saint Xavier University); Jack Reiger, 3B; Quinn Fitzgerald, LF; Cole Kilty, LF/P; Pat Burchfield, CF; Mason Sykes, RF/P; (Wabash Valley Junior College); Matt Majer, P, (Rock Valley Junior College); Joe Pavletich, P; Luke Pontikis, P.

Newcomers: Seniors: Arturo Osoria, C; Matt Jensen, INF/OF. Juniors: Teague Conrad, P, (Illinois-Chicago commit); Jon Bustamante,1B; Christian Seegers, IF; Keegan Brandt, OF/P; Luke VanBooven, OF; Carl Zilinskas, P.

Outlook: The Cougars came on strong at the conclusion of last year and won a regional title despite a sub-.500 record. They will have plenty to build off of with seven returning starters from that club. Mason Sykes and Jack Reiger lead a talented batting order while Matt Majer, Cole Kitty and junior Teague Conrad, along with Sykes, should be a formidable pitching staff. "This year's senior class went through many growing pains last year as juniors, but are primed, experienced," Conant coach Derek Fivelson said. "I expect a team will have to have a very good day offensively in order to beat our pitching and defense. If we take care of business offensively ourselves, we could be awfully fun to watch."

FremdCoach: Chris Piggott (14th season, 276-213)

Last year: 18-15 (2nd, MSL West)

Key losses: Eric Bennes, Alec Honickel, Mark Bechtold, Tom Josten, Nate Hill, Mitch Schroll, Zach Goodman, Ian Wojcik, Jordan Albano, Tom Narey

Returnees: Seniors: Luke Seidel, OF; Tom Wingen, 2B; Ashton Statz, P; Kanta Nakano, P. Juniors: Connor Giusti, 3B/P; Victor Fujiu, P; Tom Cermak, MIF/OF

Outlook: It looks to be a rebuilding year for the Vikings with just seven returning players and four seniors. That group will be led by Luke Seidel, who hit .351 last season, and Tom Wingen, who batted .266. Fremd will be counting on juniors Victor Fujiu, who threw 53 innings last year, along with Connor Giusti, Nick Rattin and Tim Okonek to step up. "We are relatively inexperienced with only six guys seeing significant playing time last year," Fremd coach Chris Piggott said. "We only have four seniors returning, but our junior class is very talented. We may take some lumps early in the year, but I expect to see a lot of guys getting opportunities during this time. If our pitching holds up, I see us being a very tough team come playoff time. The team as a whole is very competitive and they have a very good baseball IQ."

Hoffman EstatesCoach: Chuck Abbott (10-17, 2nd year)

Last year: 10-17 (4th, MSL West)

Key losses: Lucas Barnes, Nick Grybos, Kris Pascascio

Returnees: Seniors: Dylan Bloom, 3B/P (Aurora University); Jon Keller, P/INF, (North Central); Josh Magers, SS/P; Tom Curcio, C; Jimmy Burks, 2B; Sam Herbert, P; Kurt Foy, P; Richie Banas, 1B/P; Justin Morrissey, OF; Dakota Slingerland, OF; Kenny Scranton, P/OF. Juniors: Jim Kliver, P/C/OF; Kyle Krogstad, OF.

Newcomers: Juniors: Adam Burks, INF; Jordan Acosta, P/OF; Logan Willis, P/OF.

Outlook: The Hawks will have a senior-dominated squad when they take the field this season. All-area selection Dylan Bloom, who hit .417 last year, returns along with Josh Magers, who hit .347, and junior Jim Kliver, who batted .347. Jon Keller should be tops on the mound with Bloom, Magers, Kliver and a host of others to help. "Our team chemistry is outstanding," Hoffman Estates coach Chuck Abbott said. "We have great leadership. Just like any team, we are looking for our pitching to step up and keep us in ballgames, but we feel like our defense will be one of our strengths. I'm excited about what this group is capable of doing and we as a coaching staff are looking forward to watching them play."

PalatineCoach: Paul Belo (15th season, 278-254)

Last year: 20-14 (2nd, MSL West)

Key losses: Jack Grochowski, JT Streepy, Zach Oles

Returnees: Seniors: Evan Daly, P/OF; TJ Skelnick, P/1B; Jason Rivera, P; Brent Penrose P/3B; Matt Helms, P/OF, (Augustana); Thomas Soby, P; Nick Anforth, P; Jack Hopper, 3B; Max Myszka, OF; Luke Stoffel, OF; Josh Stitt, 2B; Mike Nielsen, C. Junior: Jake Anderson, C.

Newcomers: Soph: Josh Rivera, P; Fresh: Eric Pacson, P; Jack Bentz, SS/P

Outlook: Palatine returns five players as well as a pitching staff that accounted for 155 innings last year. Evan Daly leads that veteran staff along with TJ Skelnick, Jason Rivera, Matt Helms, Nick Anforth and Thomas Soby. Jack Hopper slides over to play third while talented sophomore Jack Bentz takes over at short. Josh Stitt returns to play second. "The 2018 Pirates have great depth in their pitching staff, interchangeable position players and enough offensive prowess on the base paths and at the plate to produce big innings," Palatine coach Paul Belo said. "If healthy, the Pirates could make a run at the top of the MSL West Division."

SchaumburgCoach: Cal Seely (6th season, 64-79-1)

Newcomers: Seniors: Al Murillo, 3B; Niko Korreckt, 3B; Tommy Morgan, C/1B. Juniors: Joey Fink, 3B/P; ) Tyler Slome, 3B/P; Nick DeBenedictis, SS; Vince D'Orazio, 2B; Peter Kandefer, 1B/P; Joe Unger, C; Tyler Robinson, OF/P; Ben Kim, OF; Timothy Worthem, OF; Frankie Zepeda, OF. Soph: Albert Kiszka, 3B/C; Brandon Seidner, 1B/P

Outlook: It was a rough season for the Saxons last year, but their cause for optimism this season. Schaumburg welcomes back their top player from last year in all-area pick Jack Lancaster, who hit .379. Ruan Sakamoto, Sam Phelan, Adam Kubicek and Nick Calip should also make significant contributions. "Last year's season was disappointing on several fronts," Schaumburg coach Cal Seely said. "But there are new faces on the diamond and a refreshed sense of confidence that we as a coaching staff are very excited about. The players have been working harder than ever this off-season to prove that last year was an anomaly. The mental and physical approach to our practices have been great, and the energy is contagious."

CENTRAL SUBURBAN NORTHMaine WestCoach: Mike Randazzo (2nd year 12-21), regional champion

Newcomers: Juniors: Costa Paschos, 1B; Anthony Salemi, P/SS. Sophs: David Roscoe, P/1B; Emmett Olson, P/1B.

Outlook: The Warriors are looking to go from worst to first in the CSL North, and the ability to come up with a regional title at the end of lat year shows that the Warriors mean business. Maine West boasts a solid hitting team, with Jacob Cabral (.337) and Matty Mustari (.321) leading the way. Cory Scholler, was an all-conference center-fielder, also returns as well as Illinos-Springfield recruit Matt Johnson. The Warriors also return a plethora of arms in Johnson, Matt Mustari, Josh Wastyn, Dave Rushie and Cabral. Maine West will embark on its first spring trip when it heads to Nashville. "The Warriors are hoping to build off of their impressive playoff run last season," Maine West coach Mike Randazzo said. "The returning players got valuable experience last year and really saw what it's like to win and compete at a high level. A mix of that and our talented sophomore class should help make the 2018 season a successful one."

Outlook: It was a magical season for the Lions, who won their first state baseball title. The better news is that they return five starters from that team as the IHSA success factor moves Viator up to 4A. The Lions are led by a pair of underclassmen in Notre Dame commit Casey Kmet, who hit .422 last season, and South Carolina commit Jack Mahoney, who batted .357 as a freshman last year. Bryce Hellgeth returns to anchor the rotation, while Hunter Johnson, Casey Pulikowski, Mahoney and Ryan Stejskal should also be factors. Michael Wittich, who has been the starting catcher last two seasons and hit .405 in a limited role due to an injury, also returns along with Johnson, who had 40 hits last year and batted .345. "How we handle adversity throughout the season will determine if we make a deep run in the playoffs," St. Viator coach Mike Manno said. "I believe we have a core of players that are winners, which will allow success at the end of the year. We are humbled and honored to defend what is ours."

Outlook: It will be a young team that the Chargers will field this season. Still, the expectations are high for a team that is looking to bounce back from a tough season last year. "This is a team with a lot of talent but they are extremely young with four sophomores and five freshmen on the roster," Christian Liberty coach Jed Bennett said. "This season it will be interesting to see how quickly this young team can acclimate to playing baseball at the varsity level."

They key will be home well the pitching can come through with a young staff that includes freshman Danny Flores. Our success will really depend upon how quickly our young pitchers can consistently get outs."
