Chicago Bears add backup QB Chase Daniel as Trubisky's mentor

The Bears have a new backup quarterback, and he has strong connections to coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace.

The expected addition of Chase Daniel as the No. 2 behind Mitch Trubisky, gives the Bears a quarterback familiar with the offense Nagy will run. Daniel spent three years with Nagy in Kansas City (2013-15), when he backed up Alex Smith with the Chiefs. Nagy was the Chiefs' quarterbacks coach at the time.

During that time, the 31-year-old Daniel made the only two starts of his eight-year NFL career, throwing 68 passes. Still, Daniel is expected to sign a two-year, $10 million contract, including $7 million guaranteed, when free agency officially begins at 3 p.m. (Chicago time) on Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

In the past three seasons, including his last year in Kansas City, 2016 with the Philadelphia Eagles and last year with the New Orleans Saints, Daniel threw just three passes. He has a career passer rating of 81.1 with one touchdown and one interception.

The 6-foot, 225-pound Daniel was undrafted out of Missouri in 2009 and signed with Washington. He didn't play in Washington but spent his first three years (2010-12) in New Orleans as Drew Brees' backup while Pace was in the Saints' personnel department.

It's expected that Daniel will fill the same role that 31-year-old Mark Sanchez did last season, as more of a mentor to Trubisky than a threat to play. Sanchez, who is an unrestricted free agent, did not take a snap last season.
