Girls bowling: Strong finish powers Lakes' Voight

A return trip to the girls bowling state tournament more than measured up to Emily Voight's expectations.

The Lakes junior qualified for the finals individually after a late surge on the first day of competition at Cherry Bowl in Rockford on Friday.

Voight had a strong finish in her final three games, with 245, 225 and 207 for a 677 series. She'd started out slowly with a 576 series but opened the day with a high game 259. Voight has a 1,253 six-game total, which has her tied for 11th with Freeport's Madison Wallace.

"I thought my second half was good," Voight said. "I figured out what I was doing wrong (in the morning). My team was supportive and got me in a better mood. I'd like to make the top 10, and I'm in a good spot."

The tournament leader going into Saturday's final six games is Kylie Frick of Schaumburg with 1,346.

Samantha Knab of Antioch was leading after the first three games with an impressive 673 series which featured games of 213, 235 and 225. But in the afternoon, the lanes were more difficult. Knab shot a 573, with a 228 final game that gave her a 1,246 total and 13th place

"I'm really excited to make it to the second day," said Knab, who will be bowing at Wisconsin-Whitewater next fall. "It wasn't expected coming in. I'm glad I get to bowl with Alyssa (Olson), since she made it.

"I needed the last big game to finish out after I did well in the morning. I just want to place and get a medal."

As a team, Antioch was in fifth place through the first three games, having rolled a series of 2,907 with games of 1,018, 904 and 985. But they fell off the pace in the afternoon with a 2,573. They finished in 16th place with 5,480 pins and were 162 pins back of Lincoln-Way East 12th place.

The other Sequoits bowlers were Olson (1,161), who will bowl in the finals, along with Jillian Everett (1,026), Lynn Michalec (825), Allison Kane (718) and Kayla Tikovitsch (504).

Harlem leads the way for the team title for the first day with 6,153, followed by Schaumburg (5,955) and Hoffman Estates (5,897).

Warren finished the day in 20th place with a team total of 5,234. The Blue Devils had 2,579 in the morning three games and 2,655 in the afternoon.

Hayley Gregerson led Warren with 1,120. Next came Brianna Haith (1,080), Maggie Faje (1,073), Amanda Yoder (1,030), Linsy Jante (774) and Maddison Zeni (157).

Jasmine McKeel of Wauconda rolled an 1,162 over her six games, enough to get her into Saturday's action. She had series of 621 and a 541 with a high game of 225.
