Cubs confirm Brandon Hyde accepts bench coach role with Maddon

The Chicago Cubs have promoted Brandon Hyde to bench coach, a position vacated when Dave Martinez became the new manager of the Washington Nationals.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, speaking on the Spiegel and Parkins Show on WSCR 670-AM, confirmed Thursday that Hyde will give up his role as first base coach to serve as Joe Maddon's right-hand man in the Cubs dugout. The news was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The New York Mets, according to Rosenthal, also sought Hyde to serve as their bench coach.

Before serving three years at first base for the Cubs, Hyde was the bench coach in 2014 under then-Cubs manager Rick Renteria. When Maddon was hired, he brought Martinez with him from Tampa as his bench coach.

As reported two weeks ago, Jim Hickey will serve as the Cubs pitching coach, a move Hoyer also confirmed Thursday.
