Girls volleyball: Meadows muscles past Highland Park

Rolling Meadows' girls volleyball team advanced to Tuesday's semifinal of the Class 4A Highland Park regional with a hard-fought 26-24, 30-28 triumph over No. 17 Glenbrook North on Monday.

The No. 15-seeded Mustangs (15-21) will face No. 2 Hersey (27-7) at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

"I am so proud of these girls for fighting to win tonight's match," said Meadows coach Joe DiSilvio. "We had deficits in both games but found a way to pull through and win the match."

Eleanor Errico (7 kills, 4 blocks), Elise Kowalski (5 kills), Natalie Klancnik (5 kills), Leticia Vellaneda (4 kills), Natalie Anderson (4 kills) and Caroline Slowik (3 kills) led the balanced attack for Meadows which was set by Klancnik (13 assists) and Mallory King (8 assists).

Macie Robinson paced the back row with 19 digs followed by Slowik (7) and Ashley Dawson (5).

Wheeling d. Niles North: No. 14 seeded Wheeling (19-17) posted a 25-19, 25-16 win over No. 19 Niles North in the Vikings Class 4A regional play-in match in Skokie

The Wildcats will face No. 3 Loyola in today's 5:30 p.m. semifinal.

Kamila Staniszewski and Rugile Jaciunas each had 4 kills for Wheeling while Nosa Igiehon added 3.

Jazmyn Veloso and Staniszewski each served 2 aces while Jessica Janowski handed out 14 assists.

Janowski led the back row with 12 digs followed by Veloso (11) and Nicole Nguyen (7).

Buffalo Grove d. Hoffman Estates: Claire Ferriss put down a match-high 9 kills while Mary Nowlan, Lauren Horvath, Abigail Kim and Nicole Langer each added 3 for No. 11 seeded Buffalo Grove in a 25-28, 25-8 victory over No. 22 Hoffman Estates in the Niles North Class 4A play-in match.

The Bison (17-15) will meet No. 6 Schaumburg (21-14) in Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. semifinal.

Leah Masciopinto served 3 aces for the Bison while Olivia Morino and Ferriss each had 2.

Patricia Wadas had 2 kills for Hoffman while Ashley Poland led the Hawks with 20 digs and Kathleen Gueco 10.

Maine West d. Deerfield: Central Suburban North co-champion Maine West, seeded No. 13 in the Fremd regional, defeated No 20 Deerfield 25-10, 25-14 in a play-in match of the Class 4A Fremd regional.

The Warriors (23-13) were led by Jessica Riedl (8 kills, 3 blocks), Ally Block (20 assists) and Sophia Saldana (10 digs). They will play No. 4 seeded Niles West in today's 5:30 p.m. semifinal.

Maine East d. Conant: No. 12 seeded Maine East posted a 25-22, 25-16 over No. 21 Conant in the play-in match of the Class 4A Fremd regional.

Glenbard East d. Elk Grove: No. 11 Glenbard East (17-19) posted a 25-17, 25-16 win over No. 21 Elk Grove (4-26) in the play-in match of the Grenadiers Class 4A regional.

In the other play-in match, No. 14 Downers Grove South topped No. 19 Leyden 26-24, 25-15.
