Boys soccer: Hampshire upsets Elgin for regional title

Jack Fairwood scored the deciding goal in penalty kicks Friday as Hampshire's boys soccer team upset No. 2 seed Elgin 2-1 to win the Class 3A Hampshire regional championship.

The 11th seeded Whip-Purs (14-7-3), playing in Class 3A for the first time, will take on the winner of Saturday's Rockford Guilford regional final between Streamwood and South Elgin, in the 6:30 p.m. Streamwood sectional semifinal Wednesday at Millennium Field.

After a scoreless first half, Sawyer Shores scored for Hampshire at the 19:27 mark. Elgin's Omar Lopez tied the game with 13.4 seconds left in regulation and the teams then played two scoreless overtimes before going to PKs.

Hampshire outshot Elgin (15-3-3) by a 4-3 count in the PK round to win the regional title.

Andrew Krajecki had key saves for Hampshire in regulation and Martin Estrada had 7 saves for Elgin. Hampshire found the net 4 times in the shootout while Jeremy Poletta stopped 2 shots to give Hampshire the win.
