Obsuszt puts his foot down for DuPage

Lake Zurich graduate Kyle Obsuszt got a kick out seeing a NFL stadium a few weeks ago when he was in Buffalo with his College of DuPage football team.

He is also kicking quite well for the Chaparrals.

After being promoted as the starter three games ago, Obsuszt is 2-for-2 in field goal attempts (including a long of 44 yards) and he has booted 7 extra points.

When DuPage defeated Erie Community College in Buffalo, the Chaparrals were right next door to New Era Field, home of the Buffalo Bills.

Women's soccer

Winona State freshman Georgette Topalis' first collegiate goal was the game winner goal in a 3-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Warriors improved to 5-1 (5-3-1 NSIC).

Abby Bohanski retrieved a deflected shot and then fed Topalis, who was streaking past the Southwest defenders for the second goal of the game.

Women's tennis

Carthage senior Max Mella (Warren) was selected as womens' tennis player of the week in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Mella was 4-0 in two CCIW contests, helping lead the Lady Reds to a pair of 8-1 wins against Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin by going 2-0 at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

She defeated Illinois Wesleyan's Megan Hippe (6-0, 6-1) and Millikin's Molly Angell (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 singles. Mella and teammate Angelica Emmanouil topped Angell and Melissa Donovan (8-5) and Lauren Neitzel and Hippe (8-3) at No. 1 doubles.

Swim fundaiser

October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, and some local swimmers will be taking part in a fundraiser this weekend to bring awareness to the issue.

On Friday and Saturday, the CATS are hosting a swim meet at Vernon Hills High School.

The 'Josh Church Swim Meet' is in honor of the 17-year old student athlete from Warren High School who died tragically last November as a result of a unknown Cardiac Arrhythmia.

Joshua was a swimmer, son, brother, grandson, and a friend to all who knew him. He was full of life and love and his story simply ended too soon.

Some 700 swimmers from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin are expected for the three-day meet. Purple hats and t-shirts will be sold at the meet and proceeds will benefit the Josh Church Scholarship Fund and Max Schewitz Foundation.

In addition, tickets will be sold to an upcoming fundraiser scheduled on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at Primo Italian American Cuisine for $20 which include five raffle tickets. To learn more about this event, visit: heartsmartekg.org
