Boys soccer: Barrington, Conant impress in college showcase
Last year's Class 3A boys soccer state runner-up Barrington, and its division rival Conant, fourth a year ago at the tournament, both were victorious in the second annual Mid-Suburban League College Soccer Showcase played Friday at Celtic Park in Palatine.
Senior Klaus Pallan scored 3 goals in n the Broncos' 4-0 victory over Elk Grove, while the Cougars came back from a goal down to defeat Buffalo Grove 2-1.
Reigning conference champion Wheeling got three goals, including two sensational strikes from Jose Mariscal and another from Vincente Castro, to beat Fremd 3-0.
"We're getting a little better each time out," said Wheeling coach Kevin Lennon, whose club is now 2-0-1 on the season.
The former Palatine star watched his alma mater put 5 on the scoreboard during a 5-0 triumph over Prospect.
Hersey and Schaumburg opened this day of soccer with a 1-1 draw in overtime, with Rolling Meadows, led by new coach Brett Olson, finishing up this event with an exciting 2-1 win in overtime over Hoffman Estates.
"I'm very proud of the effort and win tonight, but I reminded the guys we were 1-1 at this time of the year last year, and never won another conference game again the rest of the way, so there's a lot of work still ahead of us," said Olson.
