Golf and money: What a combo

It's that time of year that golfers have been longing for -- summertime with its longer days and warmer weather. It's also the time that local charities are looking for additional funding. The combination of these two events results in the pleasant outcome of being able to have a great time plus help a most worthy cause.

On Friday, June 27, Randall Oaks Golf Course will be the setting for the 13th annual Paul Knox Memorial Golf Outing. Paul was a young employee of the Dundee Township Park District who demonstrated compassion for the children he worked with, challenging them to be a positive part of the community. His untimely death prompted his family to channel their grief into a commitment to carry on what would have been his life's work helping children at risk.

Originally the funds raised from their annual golf outing went to help the DTPD's Outreach Program; but, once the Dundee Township Boys and Girls Club was formed, it became the recipient of the family's focus.

They could not have picked a more worthy vehicle to support to continue Paul's vision.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dundee is almost 12 years old and has now guided some of its members from first grade through graduation from high school. Last year it served over 1,200 youngsters providing programs and services at four community locations, Golfview and Perry Elementary School, Carpentersville Middle School and at the Knox Teen Center on Wakefield Street in Carpentersville.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township is a real success story with club members winning national awards in both art and nutrition. The nutrition award garnered the club a $1,000 kitchen that was installed in the Knox Center. Most recently two club members Crystal Colunga and Courtnee Gonzalez received major scholarship awards from the Dundee Township Rotary. Courtnee and Sonalia Gonzalez were among the 125 high school and college students named Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois.

This special program annually identifies, recruits and prepares bright and talented students for successful teaching careers. Just imagine, almost 2 percent of all the Golden Apple Scholars in our state came from our one local club and Courtnee has been a Boys and Girls Club member over age 10.

If you are interested in attending the 13 annual Paul Knox Memorial Golf Outing, it is a four person 18-hole Double Shotgun Scramble. You can establish your own foursome or you can be teamed with other participants. The cost for the Morning Golf at 8:30 a.m. and lunch is $110, with dinner added, cost is $135. Afternoon golf at 1:30 p.m. with lunch and dinner is $135; both morning and afternoon golf plus lunch and dinner is $170 and if you don't golf and just want to come for dinner, cost is $50. I recently came across an anonymous quote "Priorities - A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove - but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child."

Supporters of the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township can certainly take pride in their donations to ensure that this world will not only be different but better because of the young people that they helped.

Congratulations: Congratulations to our local Culver's restaurant on Randall just south of Huntley Road. It is celebrating its 5th anniversary and has been a wonderful neighbor providing much community support. It has helped in fundraising efforts for our public schools, raised money for local nonprofit agencies including the Boys and Girls Club, had Dundee Township Library reading programs and also held special events for senior citizens. As part of its birthday celebration it offered all of us a tasty treat with $1 single Butterburgers on June 16, $1 single short shakes on June 17 and $1 single cake cones on June 18.
