Fries finds the range as Elk Grove stops Meadows

Maggie Fries asked Elk Grove girls basketball coach Ryan Kirkorsky if she could take some shooting practice in the Grenadiers' field house last Saturday morning.

"She was in a slump and wanted to come and work on some things," Kirkorsky said.

Fries might just make the Saturday shooting session a regular routine the rest of the season.

The 5-foot-7 senior guard got back on track with game-high 19 points, one shy of her career-high 20, to help Elk Grove stun visiting Rolling Meadows 56-55 in the Mid-Suburban East.

Fries fired home a career-high five 3-pointers as the Grens improved to 9-13 and 2-5 while Meadows slipped to 16-8 and 4-3.

"I think Maggie got her rhythm back and got her legs back under her," Kirkorsky said. "She was real aggressive and I think she made the difference in the game."

Sophomore Diamond Boyd also had a 3-pointer for Elk Grove and finished with 10 points, followed by Michelle Calmeyn (8 points), freshman Melissa Solorio (7) and Kelly Naughton (5).

Naughton also had a 3-pointer.

"It was a fun game," said Kirkorsky, whose team led 47-38 going into the final quarter.

"Obviously they came back on us. The big thing is that we talked about how we weren't as tough as Meadows the last time we played (47-36 loss). We said we had to be tougher on every play and I think our kids showed that this time."

Freshman Jenny Vliet led the Mustangs with 17 points while sophomore Morgan Keller had 15 and freshman Jackie Kemph 15.

Barrington 53, Schaumburg 39: Senior guard Abby Kirchoff scored a game-high 18 points with four 3-pointers, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist as host Barrington (16-7, 6-10 remained 1 game behind Fremd in the MSL West.

Fillies senior Shelby Whigham added 16 points with 8 rebounds and 2 assists while Nicole Collins handed out 4 assists with 3 points.

Brooke Chandor added 7 points while Sarah Mass chipped in 4 points, 2 steals and 2 assists.

"Schaumburg played great defense in first half and we were not patient," said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. "I thought we made too many turnovers in first half."

The Fillies used a 21-5 scoring edge in the third quarter to pull away.

"In the third quarter, we took our time, spread out the floor and worked as a team," Barreiro said.

Kirchoff had 9 of the 21 third-quarter points and Whigham 8.

"That was Abby and Shelby's third quarter, but everyone contributed at different times during the whole game," Barreiro added. "We passed the ball well and that really opened up things for Abby and Shelby in that third quarter."

Amanda Kelly (11 points, three 3-pointers) and Jenna Pomagier (11 points) led Schaumburg (9-12, 2-5).

Palatine 38, Conant 37: Senior Katie Scovic (12 points), sophomore Nia Pappas (9) and junior Katelyn Mayer (8) led the host Pirates (6-15, 1-6) to their first win in the Mid-Suburban West.

Scovic had 5 of her points in the final quarter, including a 3-pointer.

Conant (13-9, 2-5) was paced by seniors Kelly Lomas (13 points) and Alyssa Rawleigh (12), who had four 3-pointers.

Maine South 56, Maine West 40: Brittany Collins led Maine West (8-15) with 11 points, 9 in the second half. The 6-foot freshman also pulled down 10 rebounds in the Central Suburban League crossover in Park Ridge.

Junior guard Amanda Hoye added 9 points and sophomore Ashley Collins 6 for the Warriors.

Mooseheart 53, Christian Liberty 41: Senior Sara Elleson led the host Chargers with 11 points and one 3-pointer while classmate Brittany Negron and junior Jayna Rowland each chipped in 10.
