Douglas K. Ray is Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of Paddock Publications Inc. A 1969 graduate of Southern Illinois University, Ray joined the Daily Herald as a reporter in 1970.
In 1972, Ray was named city editor; was named news editor in 1975; and from 1976 to 1983, he was managing editor. In May, 1983, he became executive editor, and was elected a vice president in October, 1984. He was appointed Daily Herald Editor in 1991 and was named senior vice president/editor in 1996. He became general manager in 1998, was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer in 1999 and assumed title of Chief Executive Officer in 2002. Ray was named Publisher in 2009 and Chairman of Paddock Publications Board of Directors in 2010.
Ray was president of the Illinois United Press International Editors Association and served for five years on the UPI advisory board. He is past president and board member of the Associated Press Illinois Advisory Council. He is a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, Sigma Delta Chi and the Chicago Headline Club.
Ray was selected by the Southern Illinois University journalism department as alumnus of the year, and by the Northern Illinois University as Journalist of the Year.
He was named Publisher of the Year in 2006 by Editor & Publisher magazine. He is past president of the Illinois Press Association and currently is a member of the Illinois Press Foundation. He also is a former director of the Inland Press Association. He is a member of the board of directors of the Woodfield Chicago Northwest Convention Bureau and also is a member of the Newspaper Association of America board.
