Des Plaines resident loses $5,000 to cryptocurrency scam

A Des Plaines resident reported being scammed out of $5,000 this year by someone over the internet, police said.

The crimes occurred between March 1 and Nov. 23, according to police.

The victim, a 47-year-old man, had been contacted over an online video-sharing platform and told about a cryptocurrency investment opportunity, police said. The man repeatedly sent the scammer money but got nothing in return and eventually called police, authorities said.
