Police: Summit woman was driving drunk when she caused crash near Gurnee
A Summit woman who officials say was under the influence of alcohol when she caused a crash on Route 120 near Gurnee last week remains in Lake County jail on a felony aggravated DUI charge.
A judge set bail for Maribel Gomez, 42, at $25,000 on Thursday. She would need to post $2,500 in cash to be released from jail pending trial.
Gomez also is charged with open transportation of alcohol, not having driver's insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Gomez was speeding recklessly in a Volkswagen hatchback heading west on Route 120 near the intersection of Route 21 around 10 p.m. Sept. 21 when her vehicle struck a GMC pickup truck heading in the same direction, Lake County sheriff's office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said.
The collision launched the truck onto a raised concrete shoulder barrier and severely injured the driver of the pickup, a 46-year-old Waukegan man. Covelli said the man's injuries were not life-threatening.
Officers at the crash scene determined Gomez was under the influence of alcohol and said she had an open container of alcohol in the car with her, Covelli said.
Gomez is next due in court Oct. 17.
