Driver cited in crash with Metra train in downtown Arlington Heights
An 84-year-old woman was cited for disobeying the railroad grade crossing warnings Monday after a crash between her SUV and a Metra train in Arlington Heights.
The driver was traveling west on Northwest Highway when she made a left turn onto southbound Arlington Heights Road, in front of a westbound commuter train, according to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis.
The crash at the downtown Arlington Heights intersection occurred about 9:50 a.m., briefly snarling traffic in the area.
The initial report was dispatched as a traffic crash with injuries. Authorities on Wednesday did not know the driver's condition, but any injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Her citation, considered a traffic ticket, was issued by Metra police.
Arlington Heights Road was closed to southbound traffic for about an hour Monday morning while Metra and Union Pacific Railroad personnel conducted repairs to the train, which had minor damage.
