Wheaton woman pleads guilty to election-related perjury

A Wheaton woman has pleaded guilty to felony election-related perjury.

In exchange, Susan Cain is allowed to enter a pretrial diversion program. If she completes the program, Cain will be allowed to withdraw the plea and prosecutors will dismiss the charge, according to DuPage County court records.

Cain, 64, of the 1600 block of North Stodard Avenue, pleaded guilty on Feb. 3. As part of the deal, she must perform 120 hours of community service and continue or obtain employment. Three felony counts of forgery and three other counts of perjury were dropped.

Cain was charged on June 21, 2021.

The perjury charges alleged that on Jan. 20, 2021, she completed four applications to vote by mail in the April 2021 consolidated election by using the names of her husband and three of her children.

The forgery charges alleged that three times on March 8, 2021, she signed the names of her husband and two of her children on ballot certification envelopes.

At the time of the charges, Cain said that she had self-reported "challenges" that her family encountered during the vote-by-mail process.

DuPage County authorities said the county clerk and her staff uncovered the alleged violations and notified the DuPage County state's attorney.

Cain, a Democrat, ran unsuccessfully for Milton Township trustee in the April 2021 election. She came in fifth among eight candidates for four seats.
