Naperville man accused of selling unregulated drugs to pharmacies

The owner of a Plainfield-based drug distribution company purchased $57.2 million of unregulated prescription medications and sold them to pharmacies as if they were legitimate, a federal indictment alleges.

Naperville resident Gurucharan Dua, 50, used his drug distribution company to knowingly obtain prescription drugs at discounted prices from unlicensed buyers from 2011 to 2017, according to a news release from the Northern District of Illinois' U.S. attorney's office.

Dua then directed employees to clean the bottles and sold the $57.2 million worth of unregulated medicine to pharmacies and other wholesalers as if they were from a licensed source, the news release said. Some of the pharmacies were located in Chicago and Joliet.

The indictment charges Dua with six counts of mail fraud, four counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. Dua's arraignment is scheduled for 11 a.m. Aug. 31.
