HERALD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: GLENBROOK NORTH'S DANIEL LAVRENTIEV

Glenbrook North senior Daniel Lavrentiev comes off a series of personal-best scores to lead the Spartans into the Illinois High School Association gymnastics state finals as the fifth-seeded team Friday and Saturday at Hoffman Estates.

The Spartans are 9-0 in varsity meets this season, earning the team title this past Saturday at the Glenbard West sectional.

A contributor on Glenbrook North's third-place squad in 2019, Lavrentiev's sectional scores make him the No. 6 seed on high bar (9.200), No. 7 on pommel horse (8.8500), No. 8 in all-around (52.5500) and No. 10 on still rings (8.600). He's among the top 19 state-bound gymnasts on parallel bars and vault.

In 2019 as a sophomore, Lavrentiev placed 12th on pommel horse and 19th on high bar. This weekend he hopes to improve upon his 25th position in the all-around.

"Daniel loves stepping up to compete, and competition is when he is at his best," said Glenbrook North boys gymnastics coach Ryan Dul.
