Unite Glenview likely winners in trustee race

While all three candidates running on the Unite Glenview slate aren't declaring victory just yet, they remain hopeful that they've won the open seats on the village board.

Current Trustee Mike Jenny ran unopposed for village president to take over for current President Jim Patterson, who is stepping down after two terms. The candidates who ran with him - traffic consultant Tim Doran and attorneys Gina DeBoni and Adam Sidoti - seem headed to victory with about 55% of the vote.

With 40 of 40 precincts reporting, unofficial totals show Sidoti with 3,310 votes, DeBoni with 3,407 and Doran with 3,464 votes.

Three challengers ran together as the Glenview Next slate: Paul Brancky, who received 2,773 votes; Sheri Latash, with 2,774 votes and Cathy Wilson, with 2,850 votes.

Jenny will have to appoint someone to fill his seat on the village board.

Sidoti said he and his fellow Unite Glenview trustee candidates remain cautiously optimistic as outstanding votes are counted, and they don't have a clear indication of how many there are.

"We really don't know yet. We're respecting the process," Sidoti said. "Obviously, we're optimistic because of how the numbers show right now."

As of late Tuesday, there was not a Glenview-specific breakdown for votes, but in suburban Cook County as a whole there were roughly 72,500 early voters leading up to the April 6 election. Additionally, about 73,500 mail-in ballots were ordered, and some 40,000 have been sent in. Ballots postmarked by Tuesday that arrive at election offices by April 20 will be counted, as will any provisional ballots.

Sidoti said the issue of transparency was clearly at the forefront of this election.

"The race was a close race regardless of how it turns out. One way or the other, and so far, for me, it's an indicator there are residents who want to have their voices heard, who deserve to have their voices heard," he said. "Clearly, almost 3,000 people felt one way, and almost 3,000 felt the other, and I feel that's an indication we have work to do."

In addition to village transparency, other items discussed during the election include issues arising between the firefighters union and the village when the village proposed closing one of its fire stations, as well as development issues at Willow and Pfingsten roads and the former Bess Hardware site downtown.
