HERALD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: GLENBROOK SOUTH'S SHEENA GRAHAM

A severe bone bruise to the ankle in a gymnastics meet on Feb. 16 had forced all-state Glenbrook South senior Sheena Graham to ditch her floor exercise and vault routines and try her best performing on uneven bars and balance beam. Graham's effort was more than enough on March 6 at the virtual Central Suburban League South meet, which also served as the Titans' senior night. Despite the injury, Graham won both her events, and with teammates such as all-around winner Thalia Skoulikaris, led Glenbrook South to a repeat CSL South title. A Titans co-captain, Graham also repeated as conference champion on beam, scoring a 9.55, and won her other event, bars, at 9.40. The all-around winner at both her 2020 regional and sectional meets and tied for sixth in all-around at the 2020 state meet, Graham will compete in college at Wisconsin-LaCrosse.

"This injury, which has limited Sheena in competing on all four events, has opened a door for her. On vault and floor when her team members are getting focused to compete, Sheena now has been able to reach out and support them in a way she couldn't when she had her own mental and physical preparation to do if she had competed," said Glenbrook South coach Steve Gale.

"As the saying goes, still water runs deep. Sheena may appear quiet and reserved but when she gets on the gymnastics equipment you see physicality and determination most of us can only imagine," he said.
