Aurora man gets 30 years in prison for 2018 attack on couple

An Aurora gang member has pleaded guilty to armed violence and two gun charges in connection with an August 2018 attack on a couple sitting in a car.

Alexavier Fuentes, 23, of the 300 block of Flag Street, agreed to a 30-year prison sentence Tuesday, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.

He pleaded guilty to armed violence, a Class X felony; possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 2 felony; and unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member, a Class 2 felony.

Charges of attempted first-degree murder were dropped.

Prosecutors said that on Aug. 30, 2018, Fuentes approached a vehicle occupied by someone he thought was a member of a rival gang. He then fired two shots from a semi-automatic handgun into the vehicle. A man and a woman sitting in the car were not injured.

Fuentes was not allowed to possess a handgun because he had been convicted in January 2018 of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

He must serve at least half the sentence. He received credit for 915 days he has been in the Kane County jail since his arrest.
