Late-night house fire near St. Charles displaces residents

A late night house fire in an unincorporated part of Kane County near St. Charles caused roughly $250,000 in damage to the home and displaced the residents, fire officials said.

Fox River & Countryside Fire Protection District Chief John Nixon said no one was injured in the blaze that was reported just after 10 p.m. Tuesday on the 5N600 block of Longview Drive. However, Nixon noted two cats died in the fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported smoke showing from the first floor of the two-story home and heavy fire showing from the second-floor rear windows, Nixon said.

The fire was under control in about 20 minutes and crews were on scene until almost 1:20 a.m. performing salvage operations and checking for hot spots.

Nixon said the fire originated in a second-floor bedroom, but the cause is still under investigation. The home was deemed uninhabitable and the residents were given temporary shelter by the American Red Cross at a nearby hotel.
