North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic offers free help for tenants

Illinois renters fearing eviction were given a reprieve when, earlier this month, Gov. J.B. Pritzker extended the statewide eviction moratorium to Feb. 6.

The moratorium continues to prevent evictions from being filed against all tenants who do not owe rent unless they pose a direct threat to the health and safety of other tenants or an immediate and severe risk to property.

Those tenants who owe rent still have to complete a Declaration attesting that they don't make more than $99,000, that they are unable to pay rent because of a COVID-related loss of income, and that they are making best efforts to make timely partial payments. The form is available on the Illinois Housing Development Authority website: ihda.org.

The North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic continues to provide pro-bono legal advice and assistance for income-qualifying tenants living in North suburban Cook County and throughout Lake County with housing issues such as evictions, landlord-tenant disputes, conditions/repairs, and illegal lockouts.
