Herald's Sky View: Snowfall transforms Somme Woods into peaceful winter landscape

January snowfall has transformed Somme Woods near Northbrook into beautiful and peaceful winter landscape.

While recent snowfalls haven't been heavy, the accumulation has covered the trees and ground just enough to create aesthetically pleasing scenes, particularly when viewed from the air.

While flying in the area of the pavilion during a recent visit, a lone person happened to be walking along the snow-covered roadway at the edge of the camera's view. He was one of several people enjoying the splendor of the freshly fallen snow in the woods that morning.

Upon close inspection, it's apparent that several sets of footprints follow the path of the roadway, while others go to and from the pavilion.

Aerial photos of trees highlighted with snow were taken that morning, but I chose this view because of the way the subtle lines of the pavilion set it apart from the snow, the footprints, and the fact that there is a person in the photo.

I've made visits to Somme Woods in the autumn and winter this year, and it's interesting how the area can be transformed from brilliant fall colors to a winter scene in a matter of just over two months.
