GLENVIEW IN BRIEF

Good deeds calendar

In a great idea just in time for the holiday season, the Glenview Park District staff decided on doing 31 days of good deeds throughout December. They've even put some ideas on a calendar, one good deed or idea a day.

The park district invites one and all to join in, either by following the park district's own "Good Deeds December" calendar or by people substituting their own ideas.

Today, Dec. 3, incidentally, is "Have a judgement-free day."

Once a day's good deed is achieved, the park district welcomes people to post pictures on Facebook with the tag, @Glenview Park District, and to also use the hashtag, #gooddeedsglenview.

To see the park district's release, and see their Good Deeds December calendar, start on the Glenview Park District's home page at www.glenviewparks.org.

Book it

To help reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the Glenview Public Library will remain closed to the public until at least Dec. 14.

The drive-up window will remain open with staff available to provide remote services.

The drive-up window will be open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. All external book drops are open 24 hours daily.

Hard to be-leaf

Always a highlight on the lawn and garden aficionado's calendar, the last collection day of yard-waste pickups is Dec. 4. One last time this year, leaves must be placed into landscape bags with stickers or subscription containers for collection.

Gifts for seniors

In 2019, more than 300 lower-income adults received holiday gifts through the North Shore Senior Center's Giving Tree. Though these gifts may be as plain as postage stamps, grocery store gift cards or socks, they can make a huge difference in the lives of these people, and may be the only gifts they receive.

Given the pandemic, a virtual Giving Tree is available at www.nssc.org/giving-tree. The "tree" is decorated with numerous gift tags detailing the holiday wishes of a senior in need. Shoppers can select gifts to purchase or make a donation. Most items are $25 or less.

All gifts must be wrapped, include a gift tag, and returned to North Shore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road, Northfield, no later than Dec. 16. Gifts will then be delivered by North Shore staff.

For information, call (847) 784-6000.

Toy donations needed

Collection boxes for Toys for Tots will be set up at Glenview fire stations at 3507 Glenview Road, 1901 Landwehr Road, 831 E. Lake Ave., 2250 Patriot Blvd., and 1215 Waukegan Road, plus at the village hall lobby, 25000 E. Lake Ave.

These stops are accepting new, unwrapped toys through mid-December for distribution by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves as gifts to less-fortunate children in the community.

Holiday lights disposal

Glenview residents can drop off unwanted holiday lights for recycling through Feb. 28 in the marked receptacle in front of the Public Works Department at the corner of E. Lake Avenue and Shermer Road.

String lights and extension cords are accepted; garlands, wreaths, live greens or nonrecylable materials are not. Call Public Works with questions at (847) 657-3030.

Student conservation scholarships

The Village of Glenview reminds folks that through March 1, 2021, the Illinois Conservation Foundation is accepting applications for the ICF's 2021 Conservation Achievement Scholarship program.

Up to four one-time, $2,000 scholarships are awarded to Illinois high school seniors who have effectively worked to preserve, protect, enhance and promote Illinois' natural resources. Applicants must be Illinois residents, and a senior in the year of the grant, in this case 2021.

Conservation Achievement Scholarships have been presented to 71 students since their inception in 2005, a total of $146,000.

For further information, visit the Illinois Conservation Foundation website, ilconservation.org, and go to the "What We Do" pulldown menu for "Scholarships."

Help the dogs and cats

Yes, the West Suburban Humane Society is based in Downers Grove - one of three communities that was on the Glenview Connect self-guided case study site tours - but the volunteer-based, no-kill animal shelter does serve six counties, including Cook.

The Humane Society is presenting its sixth annual "Pawction" fundraiser through 8 p.m. Dec. 13. It's an online bidding fundraiser to benefit homeless dogs and cats at the shelter. Items include gift baskets, jewelry, art, home decor, a simple donation to the shelter, and much more.

Every dollar raised goes to help provide care and training for the dogs and cats at the shelter. To get involved, visit wshs2020.givesmart.com.
