Doubles pair paces Glenbrook South's third straight girls tennis sectional title

Finishing their abbreviated season strong, the Glenbrook South pairing of junior Jenna Horne and senior Elle Stewart won the Class 2A Glenbrook South sectional doubles title on Oct. 17.

The Titans duo dispatched Prospect juniors Katherine Doyle and Natalie Katsaros 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.

The No. 1 seed at the sectional, after a bye in the opening round on Oct. 16 Horne-Stewart defeated Maine West's Gabi Krieger and Montana Walker 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.

On Saturday, the Glenbrook South girls opened with a fourth-round victory over another Prospect duo, Alexandra Giannopoulous and Hannah Pescaru, 6-1, 6-1, setting them up for the final round.

Horne and Stewart reached the consolation semifinals at the Class 2A state meet in 2019.

Combined with the third-place doubles finish by Leah Desserich and Annie Rogula, plus a third in singles by Elizabeth Hoo and a fourth from Julia Park - they played each other in the third-place match - the Titans' 30 points earned them the sectional title.

It's Glenbrook South's third straight sectional title in girls tennis, and ninth overall.

Glenbrook North's 20 points earned second-place at the nine-team sectional.

Freshman Rina Matsunaga went 3-1 to finish in second place in singles.

The No. 2 seed took a bye then swept her next two matches 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the final against another freshman, Maine West's top-seeded Lilliam Dockal.

Dockal won a tight match for the sectional title, 6-4, 6-4.
