Downers Grove man pleads guilty to trying to rob a North Central College student

A Downers Grove man has pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated robbery in connection with the stickup of a North Central College student last September.

Donald W. Herkel III, 37, of the 5800 block of Lomond Avenue, pleaded guilty Oct. 7, according to DuPage County court records. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 17.

The DuPage County state's attorney's office dropped a burglary charge in exchange for the plea.

According to authorities, Herkel was standing near a car with the door open at 1:12 a.m. Sept. 3, 2019, when he approached a student near Chicago Avenue and Brainard Street. The victim told authorities Herkel said, "I've got a gun, I'll shoot you."

The victim ran off and contacted campus security. He was not hurt.
