Laid-off Schaumburg park workers officially terminated

Hundreds of part-time employees of the Schaumburg Park District laid off in March at the start of the pandemic received official notice of their job terminations in late September after six months without a sign they might soon be able to return to work.

Those affected received a letter from Director of Human Resources Laila Bashia informing them of the change of their employment status.

"In March, we placed almost 700 part-time employees on temporary lay-off status," the letter reads. "With so much uncertainty, we waited six months to review our employee rosters and make decisions regarding the likelihood of recall to work. At this time, we do not anticipate recalling you to your position in the near future."

Schaumburg Park District Executive Director Tony LaFrenere said 234 part-time employees have so far been able to return, but the rest were about to be contacted by the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund about their apparent lack of park district income for the past six months.

LaFrenere added that the park district is currently down $6 million in revenue from operations that can't happen because of COVID-19 with no federal assistance in sight.
