Authorities say man set ex's apartment on fire near Darien

A 27-year-old Matteson man was charged with aggravated arson after setting his ex-girlfriend's apartment on fire, officials said Saturday.

Authorities from the Tri-State Fire Department and Darien Police Department responded to Colonial Manor Apartments, 1110 Plainfield Road, about 2:46 a.m. Sept. 12, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney.

The victim reported that she was at the apartment with her friend and when she opened the door for her friend to leave, Rakeem Reed pushed his way into the apartment and a struggle ensued with the victim's friend, the release said. The victim and her friend were able to leave Reed in the apartment. Authorities said the victim received a call from Reed about 2:46 a.m. in which Reed said, “You done ... I set fire to your (expletive).” The woman called 911 and an investigation led to Reed's arrest Friday.

In addition to aggravated arson, Reed, of the 2800 block of Michael Lane, is also charged with a count each of residential arson and arson, both felonies.

Officials said Saturday that Reed's bond was set at $600,000, of which he must pay 10%. He is set to appear in court again Oct. 19 for arraignment in front of Judge Alex McGimpsey.
