Algonquin-based District 300 school board approves 5-year contract for superintendent

Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300's board has unanimously approved a new five-year contract for Superintendent Fred Heid.

Board President Anne Miller said Tuesday evening she was happy to vote for the contract, saying Heid's performance, especially in the past six months, has been exemplary.

"I'm glad you're staying," she told Heid.

The contract, which is performance-based, is for July 1, 2020, through June 30, 2025, and includes a base salary of $230,000, a 1% increase over last year, records show.

Under the terms of the contract, the school board may not unilaterally decrease Heid's salary but can increase it based on the results of performance evaluations. His other benefits can also be modified by the board.

According to Heid's last contract, his salary was $227,682 a year.

The school board also will pay for Heid's contributions to the Illinois Teachers' Retirement System and the Teacher Health Insurance Security Fund, as well as the district's required contributions.

Heid will get 12 paid sick leave days a year, which he can carry over year to year, according to a copy of the contract. Three of these sick leave days can be used per incident for bereavement purposes.

He also will earn two paid personal days a year, which can be converted to sick leave if he doesn't use them. Two days each year also can be used to observe major religious holidays.

Heid will receive 25 vacation days each contract year at full pay, in addition to legal school holidays, according to the contract.

His vacation time must be used within 12 months of the year it is earned and will not accumulate, unless the school board agrees to it.

He can, however, seek to have some of his vacation time paid out as a per diem, according to the contract. He must use at least 12 vacation days each year before that benefit kicks in.

Heid will receive retroactive reimbursement for five unused vacation days he's accumulated since the 2014-15 school year.

Included in the contract is life insurance, health, dental, vision and liability insurance.
