Letter from the Editor: I'm finally getting to meet some of you!

About a month ago, I mentioned here not being able to meet any of you in person yet, which has been kind of weird starting a new position, covering new two towns full of people I don't really know at all.

That's finally starting to change. At least a little. I have a number of fun phone calls and email conversations with a lot of you.

But my first actual kinda-but-in-a-pandemic-way-in-person meeting with any of you took place late last month with Northbrook resident Harvey Shoemack and Les Bernstein of Skokie, who got in touch with me right away after that column ran to introduce themselves.

We had a great chat over Zoom one afternoon about a club they belong to in the area, and laughed a lot — you'll be hearing more about them and our conversation soon in a story I'm working on.

I don't want to give away too much just yet, but I know you'll enjoy learning about my new friends as much as I did.

A couple of weeks ago, I visited the grand opening at School of Rock Glenbrook in Northbrook to meet owner Amy Renzulli and her crew. (if you get a chance, be sure to check it out — it's worth a trip just for the artwork!)

I chatted with a few of you about the paper, signed people up for subscriptions and also got some suggestions about what you'd like to see more of. (District 27 dad: I heard you, and we're on it. My first order of business that Monday was to ask one of the reporters I work with to give a call and look at some story possibilities.)

Now I'll be out there, in a way, again: All of us in the newsroom will be talking to candidates as we head toward the November elections. The whole purpose is so all of you can be educated before you vote.

My colleagues Joe Lewnard and Dave Oberhelman and I will be talking to candidates and writing about the race in the 17th state House race between incumbent Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, a Glenview Democrat, who is running for reelection against challenger Yesoe Yoon, a Skokie Republican. We'll hopefully be talking to them over Zoom and recording it so you'll be able to hear what they have to say as well as read the stories we write.

I know what you're thinking: OK, Mel, why are you babbling at us about all of this. Start being funny about cilantro and Richard Nixon! Show us pictures of your new cat, Alexis!

Fair point. It's partly because I don't get out much. But mostly because, when I've done these kinds of interviews, I've gone out and actually talked to constituents about the candidates.

What do you want to know about them? What do you want us to ask them?

Since that sort of thing is limited right now, I'll ask you here: What do you want to know about your General Assembly members and candidates running against them?

We have several questions in mind, of course, but do you have any you would like us to ask?

Keep it civil, please. I know I don't have to talk about this with you, people of Glenview and Northbrook, but politics these days, amirite

Email me at mfindlay@dailyherald.com or all of us at glenbrooknews@dailyherald.com. Dave, Joe and I would love to hear from you.

Me, in public, for the first time in a really loooong time, at the grand opening of School of Rock Glenbrook in Northbrook on Aug. 30. And since somebody pointed this out to me: Yes. My hair looks a lot different from my column picture. Heck, I even look kind of different from the picture, which is actually only about 6 months old. Why? You'll read about that next week.
