Bond denied for Aurora man charged in Westmont car theft, Woodridge shooting

An Aurora man arrested early Friday after he stole, then wrecked a BMW from Westmont was wanted on a warrant for a Woodridge shooting in which two people were shot in a parking lot altercation, authorities said Friday.

Quilvio Contreras-Vargas, 20, of the 1000 block of North Farnsworth Avenue, was denied bond in a hearing Friday afternoon, officials said.

About 1:30 a.m., Westmont police officers spoke to a homeowner on James Drive who found the attached garage door was open and the car, a 2020 BMW 3 series, was missing, the DuPage County state's attorney's office said in a news release. The key fob was in the car.

Illinois State Police troopers located the car on I-55 traveling at times near 100 mph. The driver, later identified as Contreras-Vargas, attempted to get off I-55 at the County Line Road exit, but lost control and crashed into the median, causing the car to flip, officials said. Contreras-Vargas was taken into custody as he attempted to flee, according to the news release.

Authorities learned that there was an outstanding arrest warrant for Contreras-Vargas related to a confrontation in a Woodridge parking lot where Contreras-Vargas allegedly shot a gun into a crowd of people, including children, authorities said.

"On July 1, Woodridge police officers responded to the area of Janes and Waterbury for reports of shots fired," Woodridge Chief of Police Brian Cunningham said in the release. "Officers found two gunshot victims with non-life-threatening injuries."

The investigation led to an arrest warrant for Contreras-Vargas for two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, he said.

In the auto theft, Contreras-Vargas was been charged with residential burglary and aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle over $25,000. His next court appearance is Monday, Aug. 31.
