Herald's Sky View: In the park, over the paint

Glenview's Community Park West, 1001 Zenith Drive, features an amazing variety of amenities, including baseball, basketball, bags, and a dog park, appropriately named "Bark West."

While passing though the park recently, I encountered a trio of Glenview residents playing basketball on one of the courts, and I decided to photograph a view from above.

Part of the job of a community photojournalist is to capture everyday life, and I've photographed people playing basketball in parks many times over the last 30 years. This time, I wanted to try a different perspective.

I used a relatively low-altitude so my subjects would be somewhat recognizable, but I also had to be careful that the drone would not be struck by the ball on a high rebound. The view presented here is from an altitude of approximately 25 feet.

The drone was positioned behind the baseline to avoid flying directly over my subjects.

What's most striking to me in this is the two-tone green court, the white lines and the ball in flight toward the rim. The image is certainly different from my previous photos of outdoor basketball over the past three decades.
