A woman was in critical condition after being shot Friday night and the man she shared a Gurnee apartment with died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

According to a news release issued by the department, Gurnee police responded about 9:30 p.m. Friday to reports of a gunshot victim in an apartment in the 6700 block of Derby Drive. Officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to her stomach and carried her out of the apartment to an ambulance.

Police also removed the couple's child from the apartment. They couldn't find the shooter at that time, the release said.

Police then determined the shooter was still inside the apartment, and he refused to come out.

Nearby residents were evacuated. A few hours later, police sent a drone into the apartment and found the man dead.

The woman was critical but stable but critical Saturday morning at Condell Hospital. The child was not injured. Detectives are continuing to investigate.
