Geneva District 304 appoints new school board member

A parent of three Geneva Unit District 304 students has been chosen to fill a vacancy on the school board.

Dan Choi was appointed this week to an interim board position, with his term expiring in April 2021. He is replacing longtime board member and president Mark Grosso, who resigned last month due to health concerns.

Choi previously served on a different school district's board for five years, District 304 officials said. He was one of 12 applicants interviewed earlier this month for Grosso's open seat.

"The strong foundation he brings with his professional background and past board of education experience will allow us to hit the ground running for the remainder of the term," said Taylor Egan, who recently took over as District 304 board president. "This institutional knowledge will empower us to immediately act as a complete board of seven and focus on the important decisions we face in the coming months."

Grosso, who had served on the board since 2009, stepped down as president in April and handed over the reins to Egan during a virtual meeting. He officially resigned from the board in May, saying he was honored to have worked with "outstanding board members, superintendent and staff."

The school board met in closed session this month to interview the 12 candidates. Choi said he's grateful for the opportunity to serve his fellow District 304 parents and community members.

"I'm humbled and honored and really looking forward to working together to move this district forward," he said.
