Prosecutors: Man wanted on stalking charges after putting tracking device on ex-girlfriend's car

A 23-year-old Elgin man is wanted on felony stalking charges after a tracking device was found on his ex-girlfriend's car in mid-March, according to prosecutors and court records.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Fernando Garcia, of the 300 block of Griswold Street, for three counts of felony stalking and one count of unlawful use of an electronic tracking device, a misdemeanor, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Kane County prosecutors say that on multiple occasions beginning in 2019 through at least March 2020, Garcia followed the woman, who had he once dated, and often would show up wherever she was at

The woman filed a report with Elgin police, and after further investigation authorities found a tracking device on her 2001 Ford Escape, according to prosecutors and Kane County court records.

According to charging documents, Garcia is accused of following the woman on Jan. 25 and March 11, 2020, causing a "reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm," court records show.

Charges against Garcia were filed Thursday, court records show, and prosecutor said an arrest warrant was issued Tuesday.

The Daily Herald submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to Elgin police on Friday; the city has five business days to respond.

Garcia's bail has been set at $10,000, meaning he must post $1,000 to be released while the case is pending.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about Garcia to call 911 or Elgin police (847) 289-2700.

If convicted of the most severe charges, Garcia faces a sentence ranging from probation to up to three years in prison.
