Naperville's India Day canceled

Naperville Indian Community Outreach has canceled its India Day 2020 parade and festival, which had been scheduled for Aug. 9.

Organizers made the decision Monday after learning about Phase 4 regulations under the Restore Illinois plan.

"We will not be able to proceed with the India Day celebration this year as planned," organizers said about the event, which typically draws thousands of parade spectators and concertgoers.

This would have been the sixth annual celebration of India's independence after the event began in Naperville in 2015.

Organizers now are seeking input about ideas for how to celebrate with a safer alternative in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ideas under discussion so far include a virtual concert with a popular Bollywood singer, a car parade and a fireworks show.
