Kohl Children's Pop-Up Museum returns to Round Lake Beach

"The Place Where Awesome Lives" returns to Round Lake Beach starting Tuesday.

The free Kohl Children's Pop-Up Museum exhibit will be open every Tuesday through Saturday from June 23 through July 24 - except for Independence Day - at the Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center, 2007 N. Civic Center Way.

"The Pop-Up Museum is a key part of our access and inclusion efforts," Museum Vice President of Programming Stephanie Bynum said in a statement. "We thank the city of Round Lake Beach who provided this space so local children and families can enjoy high-quality educational programming close to home."

As with most facilities during the pandemic, there will be restrictions and guidelines in place. All visitors over the age of 2 will be required to wear a face mask. Admission will be limited to two groups of 9 people per one-hour session. The session times are: 9 to 10 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, 1 to 2 p.m., and 3 to 4 p.m.

Registration is free and is required for each session. Sign up at pop-up-2020-rlb.eventbrite.com.

Named one of the best children's museums in the country by USA Today, Kohl Children's Museum is designed for children ages 8 and younger to encourage STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) development through games and other forms of entertainment.

This is the second year the museum had a pop-up exhibit in the Round Lake Beach area. A pop-up museum visited Waukegan earlier this year and is scheduled to be in North Chicago/Great Lakes later this year but no dates have been set.

New activities include the "Tech Play Lab," where programmable robots will be used to assist in problem solving, and "Young Paleontologists," which lets participants study fossils inside of tents with real excavation equipment.

The main museum at 2100 Patriot Blvd. in Glenview is still closed because of COVID-19.
