Aurora man sent to prison for 4 domestic attacks

An Aurora man convicted of abusing a woman he knew in October 2018 was sentenced to six years in prison this week after also admitting to three more domestic attacks.

A Kane County jury in March convicted Stanley Ortega, 55, of the 1200 block of Trask Street, of felony aggravated domestic battery/three prior convictions, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and violation of a domestic violence bail bond.

Ortega was convicted of pushing the victim as she ran out of a house in October 2018, causing significant bruising.

On Thursday, at his sentencing hearing before Judge John Barsanti, Ortega also pleaded guilty in three other felony domestic battery cases that were pending against him. The victim, prosecutors said, reported all the attacks to police at the same time.

Ortega pleaded guilty to aggravated domestic battery/great bodily harm, aggravated domestic battery/strangulation, domestic battery and unlawful restraint in the three cases.

According to prosecutors, Ortega tied the victim's hands and feet together on June 18, 2018, and then beat and choked her. He pushed the victim on Aug. 16, 2018, causing her to fall and break a hip. And he punched the victim on Aug. 31, 2018, causing a wound that required stitches.

Ortega later took out the stitches because, according to the victim, he did not like the way they looked, prosecutors said.

"Domestic abuse remains a constant in all communities," said State's Attorney Joe McMahon. "The first step to stopping it is to seek help. Although some domestic abuse survivors are reluctant to report abuse to police, doing so can help an abuser by getting the abuser into treatment and counseling. Getting abusers to stop ultimately is what we all want, and treatment has proven effective."

Under state law, Ortega must serve 85% or a little over four years, of his sentence. He also gets credit for 439 days served at the jail while the cases were pending.
